An unusual turn of events adding to the drama of this first race of the Sprint Cup series switches the second BK Racing car — Alex Bowman driving car 23 — to be transformed into the Borla Exhaust car for Sunday!
Rookie Bowman has qualified to start in the 15th row, 30th position out of 43. The 23 car will be rewrapped to sport the Borla Exhaust red/black/white colors and exhaust graphic scheme!
What brought this about? BK Racing's 83 car, driven by rookie Ryan Truex and sponsored by Borla Exhaust, was involved in the big wreck in Wednesday's practice run.
The team was able to prep their backup car just in time for Truex to run in the second Duel's 60 lap qualifier on Thursday. There was no way for Truex to get any seat time.
Truex got up to the 19th position when, in the last corner of the last of 60 laps to qualify for Sunday, Jimmie Johnson's car ran out of gas, triggering a spectacular 7-car crash, putting an end to the race with just a half lap to go.
A testament to the rookie's driving skills, Ryan was able to avoid involvement in the mayhem on the track, wiggling his way around to prevent any damage to the car.
Unfortunately, when the official results were announced, it was learned Truex did not make it on the bubble, dashing his hopes for a spot in Sunday's race. But Phoenix is only another week away.
