Hi all, I'm sure this has been covered many times before, did some looking but must not have looked hard enough.....what is the widest rim and tire you can fit on the rear of an 08 GT without major mods? Thanx

PS. As far as wheels are concerned, you HAVE a GT500 in reguards to room for wheels
Yeah wasnt sure if there was a difference between the GT and GT500 from an axle width perspective...knew the body and fenders were pretty much the same.....
There is a guy over on the Shelby forums that has taken Ford Racing FR500 wheels that are 24mm offset, had them widened 3" (they were 9" to begin with), then mounted 335/30-18 Michelin Pilot Sports, then added .250" wheel spacers and he says he's good...he has since changed to a slightly bigger tire but he's also running mini-tubs now......car looks incredible...might try and run the same setup on a GT...just not sure which rims...either way will be sending them off to Weldcraft....seems like they are the best for widening.....
Anyway thanx Jazzer for the article, clears quite a few things up......

I would like to see pics of this car (links?), because this is hard to believe. I am not doubting your read/saw it, but just don't see an S197 running this set up without mini-tubs first (or AT LEAST some major hammering!). I just did some math and see about 1.25" room needed beyond a 10" wheel with a +45mm off-set.
Are you sure it was not a 2.5" spacer? Even then, it sounds fishy to me.
his name on the shelby site is gordyd4, he's got pics of this setup and it just looks incredible....hopefully the link works Jazzer because the guy's got some good info in there....sounds like he know's what he's talking about..........he said he bought 5 different sets of rims just to test them for the right look and fit.................
let me know if the link doesnt work and I'll try and post some pics of his setup......
BTW, I realized the guys wheel was +24mm prior to widening, but was comparing to a +45mm 10" wheel. This is pretty maxed out at 7.2" back-space, but I guess he found some room. I just quickly ran through the thread and looks like a legit mod, but suspect he will find a bit more rubbing over time.
I will have to eat my words on this one, I could not have imagined a 12" wheel on an S197. I think the 18" wheel and 30 series is really helpful in this area. He wants to go 345/35/18"s and will gain another 1/2" of diameter and just may get away with it as well. He is obviously a machinist, so has the mad skills to pull off such a mod.
