Default Too Wide Up Front

Right now I have 255/40/17 Kumhos up front, and running 555r Nittos in the back at 275/40/17. My car tramlines like a MOTHER!@#$%. I hate it. Driving downtown is a workout, and not fun at all.

My question is, I know the stock size on our cars are 245/45/17, but I've heard of getting 235/45/17s?

Would the reduction of tramlining be worth the loss of performance? My car isn't a road racing machine by any means, just a fun car that hits the track occasionally. I just want to be able to enjoy driving it.

And would a 235 even fit on my 17x9 wheels?

You are gonna get MINIMAL reduction in tramlining going from a 255 to a 245 or 235.

There is a different issue going on here and suspect a couple things. The Nittos are a higher performance tire than you likely had previously and certainly more than stock. They will have a stiffer sidewall and is made somewhat worse going narrower on a 9" wheel. This will stretch the sidewall tighter and should worsen the tramlining. Have you done ANY other mods since these tires? Lowered or struts/shocks and such? Possibly bad ball joints or bushings? Do you know your caster/camber settings?

I run a 295/30 R comp. on 10" wheels up front with a Griggs GR-40/SLA set-up..... I am all too aware of tramlining, but worth it to me

I know I need an alignment, and was gonna lower and do struts and shocks over the winter, along with the new front tires. Everything is tight in my front end, I even put the stiffer rack bushings in.

Its prob just way out of alignment and that the tires are near balding.

And my car did this before I put the nittos on it. And even before I put the 17's on it, when I had the 16 inch stockers. The 17s did make it worse though.

Ironically, stiff or worn bushings will exasterbate tramlining. Stiffer bushings will make the wheels turn the car more easily due to a bump (exactly the case for me) and worn bushings will allow more slop and car will just take it's own course due to ruts in the road. Excessive castor will make your car "dart" more as well, which is why I asked.
