Default Best tire size for 18x9 wheels?

Hello all. I am in the market for new tires on my 18x9's for a non-lowered Stang. I currently have 265/35/18 on them and dont have any intention of lowering the car. That was what I originally wanted to do, but decided to stop modding. I would actually prefer to go to a 45 series so it doesnt appear that I need to lower the car, but not sure how narrow of a tire I can put on a 18x9 wheel. Mainly so there is no rubbing up front. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Ron

Welcome to MF's, Ron

You are looking between a 245~275 for a 9" wheel re: tire width. You need to consider the overall diameter of the tire you want to install as well as your final drive ratio and speedometer accuracy going larger tires.

I think you can run a 45 series tire in an 18" wheel, but would be best to keep under 28" for clearance. Even this is a bit large for your car, but don't forsee an issue on stock hight. You will also effect your speedometer accuracy going that large and will "up" your gearing a bit. This means your speedo will run higher than your actual speed and have a bit less "pep" off the line as you are running larger diameter tires and raises your gearing somewhat. Neither of these will be very big differences, but would expect 10 MPH off at about 70 MPH or so. You may notice a bit less git up and go if you take off from a stop sign, but not a whole lot.

Jazzer

PS. Keep in mind that a 1" larger diameter tire will only reduce your fender gap by 1/2". Look up your proposed tires on Tire Rack and see specs page. This will give you the overall diameter of the tire. My car is VERY low and can run no larger than a 25.6" tire to avoid rubbing.

I just purchased a 265-35-18 for my car.a buddy of mine has 265 35 on his and it has enough clearance for the inner and outer walls and it has a good look on the rim itself
