Default New set of wheels - whats your advice?

Hey all,
So I'm looking to get a new set of wheels/tires. (going to use stock w/ studs as winter tires) At first I was thinking I might go with some cheap used tires off of craigs list, but decided I'd rather get new wheels. I'm thinkin I want to go w/ 18's like here. But my question is how much better traction wise is 18x10 vs 18x9, is it worth it to pay more for the tires and rims for 18x10, or will 18x9 provide enough traction. I wanna be able to take off and not even chirp the tires. Any advice?

Your MUCH better off going with a set of 7" wheels for traction in the snow. A wider tire will tend to ride on top of the snow, rather than cut down through it to get compact and provide traction.

Get cheapo 7" wheels, stockers are more than fine, and go 17" diameter. That way, you have lots of choices in tires and some room to run chains if you get in trouble.

10s will allow for more rubber to the ground since you can choose bigger tires.

The bigger the wheel, the wider the tire and the wider the tire, the more traction. Every bit helps for better traction. I would get the 18x10s but then again if money is an issue, it would just depend on how often you are going to be launching it hard and what your real needs are for the tires.

Sometimes I read too quickly and get it all wrong

I agree on wider tires for improved traction, but the chirping is going to be from harder compound tires, not just thinner ones. So you are best served to go with a softer one, such as a 300 UTQG<, generally speaking. If you are looking for a good launch as opposed to better cornering tire, you might like the Nitto 555R, but is going to give you a pretty limited life.

I'd have to say that in regard to appearance I'd go with the staggered set-up 18x9/10, somehting that has a little more dish in the rear.

I was thinking about going w/ the nitto's, but how bad is life expectancy, anyone know approx. miles? Also, I'd like it to be a good corning tire as well, cuz I drive highway 20 here in california a lot, and it's a real fun windy mountain road.
and Lance, do you guys have a good tire package to go w/ the link I have above/how much would it cost? thanks!

HWY 20 is a SPECTACULAR road between HWY's 1 & 101!

Too bad it is full of FRIGGIN' DIRTBAGS THAT WON'T USE THE FRIGGIN' TURNOUTS THAT ARE NOT ONLY IDENTIFIED AS 1/2 MILE, 1/4 MILE, 1000 YARDS, 100 YARDS AWAY, BUT ARE ALSO 3000 FEET LONG SO ONE DOESN'T EVEN HAVE TO SLOW DOWN TO USE IT, JUST MOSEY ON OVER SO I CAN PASS THEIR 20 MPH ARSE AND GIVE A FRIGGIN' THANK YOU IN RETURN... but I digress

The Nitto 555R is a 100 UTQG tire and is VERY soft. Not only that, but starts out with 6/32" of tread depth to boot. I run the Toyo R888's and are the same UTQG and tread depth. At least they were back in May when I installed them and are about 80% dead at this point. This includes about 8 AX events, a track day at Infineon and probably 10K of street miles. I was hoping for 8K, so I have done well with my $2K investment

Jazzer

What part of HWY 20 do you normally cruise? My g/f and I cruise up the coast to Fort Bragg all the time and were planning on heading up in the next couple weeks. LMK if you can be in the area and can do lunch.
