I want to put 275's on a 9 inch wheel on the front of my 2011 , because the tire i want doesnt come in 265.

It would be a 275 40 19 on a 19x9 wheel, will this cause any negative effects on the performance of the tire or handling? Will 275's rub up front at all?

I suppose i could go 255 45 19 but that probably wouldnt look as good - would it really make a difference in handling characteristics or anything?

Will fit but I say 255 would look better for the fronts. It will affect handling yes, the response will be a bit slower since theres so much more meat. Just get a sticker tire if you worry about performance.

the tires im getting are michelin pilot supersports

leaning toward 275's but... not positive yet

Those tires are good enough in sizes for 245/255 for handling and braking. I use those tires 245/45/17 on my 900 hp 240sx. 275 will reduce handling and over steer will occur.

should have included more info in the original post i guess

front wheels are 19x9 rear are 20x10.5

for the rear tires im using 295 35 20

front tires will either be 275 40 19 or 255 45 19

45 just seems like kind of a lot of sidewall not sure if that would preform less precise compared to a 275 40

**** i'm sorry, I totally misread the thread. 275 wouldn't affect much since you coming from 265. Although the 265 does look a bit better for the fronts.

I think you will have a better balance of handling and cosistant "look" between front/rear with the 255's up front. If not, the 275's will bulge over the sidewalls and the rears will be tucked in a bit. This will further improve the grip out back, over that of the fronts. This will show the results in hard cornering, as I expect additional understeer as a result.

Since the factory puts 255's on 19x8-1/2" wheels for my PP, the difference of +20mm on sidewall for +12.6mm on wheel width is an extra 7.4mm. Half of that extra width per side is only 3.7mm. That's an eighth of an inch. If anyone can detect that difference in handling or appearance, well, I give up.
Have you considered the 35's rather than the 40's? What kind of ride height are you looking for?

Can't get my head around your math, but must also consider that a sidwall is a percentage of width. This means that the wider the tire, the taller the sidewall, even though the profile number is unchanged.

Anyway, A lower profile is going to tighten up the sidewall, but regardless of the height, the tire is wider than the wheel. This allows much more flex and the wheel rolls over onto the sidewall and loses grip. Just look at the very high-end cars and will see that the tire is almost always much narrower than the wheel. This keeps the sidewalls tight and hold a line better in a corner. I ran a set of 275/35/18" Michelin PS2's on a set of 9" wheels and HATED the roll over of tire. I still run that tire, but now a 295/30/18" on a 10" wheel and much better. Still not an ideal width for cornering, but are fine for my Winter wheels.
