Default sidewall size ?

i want to upgrade the width of my tires when i replace them, but i want a tire with the same height as the stock ones.

the stock tires are 235/55/17. i want to go to a 275/??/17. what is a close tire size in a 275 series that will be close to the same height? the closer the better.

I would have to say 275/45/17 but good luck finding someone that even makes that size tire. 275/50/17 is close too, but not a lot of company's make that size. 275/40/17 would be your best bet,as far as having a good selection but its a 25in tall tire to your 27in it will throw off your speedometer.

The current 235/55/17 tires you run = 27.2" diameter

You need only find a new 17" tire that is the same diameter. The issue I see is your 8" wheel and trying to run anything wider with the proper fit. You are really only going to get a 245~255 to fit well so you don't have a lot of choices. I would not run a 275 tire on your 8" wheels.

Why do you want to keep the same diameter? Is this a speedometer accuracy issue or fender gap isssue?

i want to keep the same diameter because i want to still run the stock tires in front and get some wider tires out back. 1st and 2nd gear is pretty much a waste of time for me. no traction at all

i was looking at 275 tires because i have 275/40/17 BFG drag radias that fit good as far as width go's, but they are noticably shorter than the fronts and it looks kind of dumb, so i only run them at the test & tune nights. i want something a little wider for the streets so i can hook up some times.
