Default What are the best handling 20" tire sizes?

I've seen 265 or 275 front, and 285, 295, 305 and 315 rears....what's the best setup for good handling in 20" size?

Thanks guys.

It is really not quite as simple as that, unfortunately

Many, many things go into the handling of a car, but tires happen to be one of the most important components (all things second to the driver, of course). That is to say, you can have a wonderful suspension set-up for a specific condition, but without good tires to put it all to the ground, you won't get the most of it. On the other hand, you can have a stock suspension with VERY sticky tires properly fitted with a great driver and kick ****!

Without getting into the suspension end of it, I would recommend a lower profile tire with a stiff sidewall. If you were to be on 9" & 10" wheels, I would likely say 255/35's & 285/30's in a VERY high performance tire. This tire would be an "R" compound which is real soft and generally a semi-slick design. Take a look at Tire Racks DOT & competition tires page and will give you a lots of choices and can see the $$$'s involved. You probably didn't want all this information, but really need to make more than just width decisions on tire choices.

I am into cornering WAYYYYYYYY more than anything else in performance driving, so will tell you what I run on my Summer wheels:

Toyo R888 in 30 series on 10" & 11" wheels:

I am hoping to get 8K miles from them with 10 AX days and the one day I spend running around Infineon included. A lower profile tire is going to be rougher on the road and will be even more harsh on something like the R888.

Put together a budget with your needs and let us know what you think.

Default Tire size

For handling, wider does not always mean better. Mounting the proper size on the proper rim diameter will make a difference. Don't go stick a 275 on a 9 inch wheel when a 255 would work better.

I'm currently running 18x9 and 18x10 w/265/35/18 and 285/35/18.

Going next to 20x10 and 20x11 wheels, thinking 275/35/20 and 305/30/20 tires. I'm going to search the threads to see what 20" tire sets people are running with good results. If anyone has mercy on me and posts a link to such a thread, thank you!

Red face

I have been searching for days after finding out the alcoa ss wheels are no longer being made (at least for sevreal months). I am going to try the steeda spyders in 20x9.5 and 20x11, only with the machined face and spokes not the black spokes (my car is black) shown here. I have been assured by steeda that this combo shown will fit s197's without rubbing, even being lowred 1 inch fr and 1.5 inch rr. The package steeda is offering uses Nitto NT05'S on all fours in a 275/35fr and 315/35rr. Jazzer, sense you are the expert what do you think about the package? You can see from the pics that even being a 35 series, still looks to have a good side wall height.

That is a lot of wheel for ANY Mustang, but I run 11"s on my ride with no rubbing. Of course, I have done LOTS of ........ "expansion" of the inside of fenders for room. Take a look at my Choosing a new tire thead and is a paragraph with links to someone who installed.... 12"s? and was not as difficult as one would think. I believe he off-set the shock brackets, but ran an 18" wheel and 30 or 35 series tire to clear.

Read up on what that guy did and see what you think.

Thanks, I will check that out.
I guess I should trust steeda as they use this tire and rim size on both the Q350 (spyder wheels) and Q550 (HRE wheels). I have a picture of a 08 gt500 with spyders but he has nitto invos 295/35 on the rear and 275 on front. He got these before the nt05 came out and has no clearnce issues.

you have to realize that having 20's will sacrifice obviously. But if you must like everyone else said keep the widths of the tire and wheel to spec. Plus nothing is worse then a mushroom looking wheel and tire package.

I ended up with this:

20” HRE 560C forged wheels
Pirelli P Zero tires (275/30/20 Front and 295/30/20 Rear)
Gloss black barrels, gloss metallic charcoal centers

These pics don't show it because they're a few weeks old, but I also upgraded the front brakes to the GT500 Brembos.

Default HRE's

Very nice look. Good center/outer color choice on the wheel!
