Default Issues with 305/35r20 on rear

I did a lot of research before I bought some used rims and tires. I was expecting them to fit OK.

I got some 20" X 9.5" rims with +35 offset with Nitto drags size 305/35.

My 2013 GT convertible is lowered 1 or 1 1/2" all around. Not slammed by any stretch.

I put the wheels on and there is no way that they are not bubbling. Is it the narrow rim? The 305/35 recommends a 10" rim.

This sucks as I really like the look. I also don't have the cash for 2 new fears. The tires on it are only 100 miles old and look new.

Any other options I am missing?

The car has an adjustable panhard bar, the rear is centered.

I believe 275 is the widest for a 9.5" rim, I heard of people running 285 with no problems but i think you really pushing it with 305. That should be a 10.5 i believe.

Based off of the size you mentioned, the only Nitto Drag Competition Tire they carry is the NT555R, which has a recommendation of an 11" wheel, with a 10" being the smallest to be deemed OK as the overall tire width is 12.17".

Hope that information helps.

That 10" is a recommended minimum, and a 305-wide tire will have already started to look a bit "bulged" out at mid-sidewall height at that width. Mounting a 305 on 9.5" will draw the tire beads in half an inch closer together making the bulge bigger.

While the tire will 'work' like that, 9.5" is below the minimum wheel width that the tire industry considers appropriate for a 305 (I think it's a sidewall flexing and heat generation thing). A 9.5" wide wheel fitment like yours probably isn't going to put you on the wrong side of pass-fail for a trip to the local dragstrip to make a few passes, but I would strongly urge you to avoid loading the car up with people and luggage for a heavily loaded high speed trip across Texas/Arizona/New Mexico in 100°+ summer heat.

Appearance-wise, it's going to depend on your individual preferences what rim width will look best to you. But if making your appearance preference happen is important and you don't want to see much (or any) of the tire sticking out wider than the outer edges of the wheel flange, you'll want rims at least at, if not wider than, the 11" measuring width.

305/35-20 on 9.5" (case 1, black lines) vs the same tire on 11" (case 2, red) for an approximate comparison. Look at the differences in sidewall curvature and how far out past the edges of the wheels, not the difference in overall width. The bulge for case 1 is 0.61", vs 0.16" for case 2.
