New SHies for the Horse
So I'm going to need to have the horse shoed in about 5000 miles. I need something that I can run SAFELY on in the winter, but no snow it ice, just when its just cold. I see a lot of tires saying "Summer" tires. I like the looks of a couple of Nittos, and thanks JimC for your posts on those particular tires. Would like to know what you guys are running. Anyone running those Indy 500 Firestones, they are priced really good, but I wonder about those?

Best I can tell from Tire Rack's own testing is that they'll be at or just below the top of the UHP category, maybe just barely out of Max Performance Summer (and a couple of steps below Extreme). Seems they're a pretty new tire, but I give a good bit more weight to TR's own testing than to most customer reviews anyway.
If you aren't competing at autocross or trying to get road course lap times down, and rarely see temperatures drop below about 40° F they should be a pretty good choice. Below 40°, a little extra care when driving may be necessary, as summer tires in general lose some of their grip at about that point. Some more than others.

Just a follow up. I finally had to do something. One tire had a gash in the sidewall I didn't see, and another had 2 nails in it and I just said screw and bought a whole set. I can not believe how hard tires in my size are to come by around here. Most places were a week out on just about any brand. But I did find a set a Discount tire, Michelin Pilot Sport AS3 Plus. One of my requirements was I wanted a an AS tire, since I will be driving it when its cold out, and it had to be quiet. I'm not going to a track, so a lot of tires out there weren't needed, but I did want some traction in the rain, and the occasional sharp turn or two, hint hint. I have just under 500 miles on these and so far so good. I'm not a fan of Michelin tires, but these will have to do for now.
