Everyone says I'm nuts for driving my car this winter, but I tell them with the right tires, anything will cut through snow.
That being said, I'm looking to put together a winter wheel/tire setup on a budget. Looks aren't important. I have a 2015 GT Premium with the 20inch wheels, and putting snow tires on those is more money than it's worth, so I'm gonna get some cheap wheels for snow tires. Thinking somewhere around the 17-18" range. I'm trying to keep everything under 1000, give or take a couple hundred. I know that's a tall order, especially when I factor in the cost of putting TPS in every wheel, but I'm not much of a wheel/tire guy, so I'm looking for some advice. I'm in New England, so snow is either none at all, or a foot a day, and there's no way to predict it. I know I can't run the Pzeros in the snow, so something thinner (probably need wheel spacers too?) and more suited for potential snow would be the way to go. For tires, I was thinking just some blizzaks or X-ice, but if anyone has any recommendations for something else, I'm all ears.
The looks of the wheels and the material are unimportant, as long as they're not hideous. I'm all about function over form. I have a ton of 4 bolt fox body wheels sitting in my garage. A lot of good that does me these days..
I checked tire rack, but for some reason I can't get them to ship wheels to me.
I found a decent set on craigslist for 400 bucks mounted on some ugly American Racing wheels. They don't have the TPS, so that would be about another 250 to install. Not terrible, but I'm waiting to hear back about the car they came off of. He said it was a Cadillac, but that doesn't help me identify the bolt pattern.
I just picked up a 2005 Mustang Deluxe. It came with after market 18" wheels and Z rated performance tires. I also live in N.E., so these tires are not an option in the winter. I had purchased 2006 16x7 steel Mustang wheels back in 2013 for $99 for 4. I am going out for used tires this weekend. I am going to run 225-65-16's. Should be under $200.
I painted them so they weren't too ugly. It will be around $400 after mounting and balancing.

Alright, found a good set of wheels and tires pulled from a 2013 mustang GT. 17 inch wheels, new tires, and TPMS installed. Question though, is the TPMS programmer (key fob style) compatible with the 2015's? Most of them say they're good up to 2014, but I saw a CJ Pony Parts video a while back where he used one and said they were good for pretty much all years ford offered TPMS sensors. I want to purchase one to make it easier to swap back and forth, but don't want to buy something I can't use.
If I was buying them new, I would definitely invest in blizzaks or some X-ice, but right now I'm looking for an inexpensive option to limp through the winter. Tires have about 100 miles on them, and reviews give them a good rating, so I'm sure they'll be ok for the season. Plus, I really just wanted an extra set of wheels with TPMS already installed. They're half decent looking TSW wheels in perfect condition, so at least I can still ride in style.
I've been researching the programming tool, and even though most retailers say it's good up to 2014, others say the same part number will work for post 2014 cars, so I'm gonna take the gamble and buy it. It's only 35 bucks. I'll report my results.
