Ford Mustang V6 and Mustang GT 1994-2004: How to Disable Seat Belt Chime

If you're tired of your Ford Mustang V6 or GT chiming every time you forget to buckle up, don't worry. You can disable the alert; however, you'll still need to buckle up to obey the law.

This article applies to the Ford Mustang V6 and Mustang GT (1994-2004).

Let's be clear here, you should always wear a seat belt while operating a vehicle, because the risks for not wearing a seat belt go far beyond receiving a traffic citation. You could be seriously injured, cut your life short, or someone else's on the road. If you wish to disable the seat belt chime in your Ford Mustang because the sound is bothersome, you may do so. However, you should never disable the chime to bypass needing to wear a seat belt while driving. The same goes for your passengers. So, whether you keep the chime active or not, always remember to buckle up before you drive.

Material Needed

  • None!

Step 1 – Disable the chime using option one

  • Hop into your 1994 to 2004 Ford Mustang V6 or GT.
  • Power up, but do not start your Ford Mustang.
  • The seat belt light should display on your dashboard.
  • Wait for it to go off, and then buckle and unbuckle your seat belt three times in a row.
  • Turn your parking lights on immediately.
  • Buckle and then unbuckle your seat belt 7 to 10 times, at which point your seat belt light should flash rapidly across your dashboard.
  • Allow the seat belt light to flash until it stops, and then put on your seat belt.
  • Start your vehicle.

Pro Tip

You will not need to perform the above actions every time you enter your vehicle. Performing them now will allow you to disable the chime until you reactivate it at a later time.

Step 2 – Disable the chime using option two

  • Turn the ignition to the "ON" position, but do not crank the engine.
  • Wait for the seat belt chime to sound, and then go off; this could take one to two minutes, so be patient.
  • You will have only 60 seconds to perform the following tasks: buckle and then unbuckle your seat belt three times (end with your seat belt unbuckled). Engage your headlamps once, and then turn them off. Then buckle and unbuckle your seat belt three time (once again, end with your seat belt unbuckled).
  • You will have just seven seconds to buckle and unbuckle your seat belt after the warning light once again appears on your dashboard.
  • The seat belt light might blink intermittently to indicate the process is done.

Step 3 – Visit your local dealer

Have your local Ford dealer disable the chime electronically using your vehicle's internal computer. Not all dealers will agree to disable the seat belt chime in your Ford Mustang due to safety concerns, so you might need to ask around before driving out of the lot.
