Ford Mustang V6 and Mustang GT 1994-2004: How to Install Radar Detector

Here are a few steps you can take to stealthily fight back against your local police patrol's radar systems. It's not foolproof, but it's a lot better than driving naked without one.

This article applies to the Ford Mustang V6 and GT (1994-2004).

I've never been unfortunate enough to have my license suspended, but I do remember the entire year my insurance company cancelled my policy and I wound up paying insurance premiums that were four times higher than normal because of my speeding tickets. Oh what I would have given to have a radar detector back in the "good 'ol days."

Let's save you from that problem. Here are some step-by-step instructions on how you can install a radar detector to (1) avoid radar, and (2) avoid device detection in case you live in a state where radar detectors are illegal.

Materials Needed

  • Wire crimper
  • Needle nose pliers

One of the issues you need to concern yourself with is whether or not radar detectors are legal in your state. If they are not, then being caught with one will (1) guarantee that you get the speeding ticket anyway, and (2) either another fine for the detector or confiscation of the radar detector by the police officer. The very best case scenario is one very angry police officer. I'm assuming you want to avoid all of that, so let's try to be as stealth as possible.

Step 1 – Locate fuse box

First you will need to find the fuse box for your vehicle. Once located, choose which fuse you will use to power your radar detector.

Pro Tip

Be sure to choose a fuse where when the car is turned off, no power will be running to your radar detector. Otherwise, you will need to always make sure the detector is turned off when the car is off to avoid a dead battery.

Step 2 – Choose where you will place your radar detector

Remember, we want to be as stealth as possible. I'm suggesting that you put it above your visor out of the way of plain sight view. You can do this a couple of ways: with a visor pouch that will hold your radar detector, or with a simple clip that will hold your radar detector in place.

  • Figure 3. A visor clip for your radar detector.

Pro Tips

  • Both of these accessories are available for a nominal cost from RadarBusters.com
  • Do not place your radar detector in this location if it has GPS, as the roof will block the GPS signal. This is a perfect location, however, if you do not have the GPS feature.

Step 3 – Tuck the wire

Tuck the wire cord under the edge of the headliner running towards the driver's side door and behind the rubber door panel towards your Mustang's fuse box.

  • Figure 4. Tuck the wire under the edge of the headliner.
  • Figure 5. Tuck the wire behind the rubber door panel.
  • Figure 6. Continue tucking on down towards the fuse box.

Step 4 – Wire radar

Using an "add-a-circuit" connector, cut off the connector on the red wire of your radar detector's cord. With your wire crimper, connect the red wire the "add-a-circuit" connector.

  • Figure 8. Connect the red wire to your "add-a-circuit."

Pro Tip

An "add-a circuit" is available from any auto parts store for a nominal cost.

Step 5 – Connect your radar detector to your fuse box

Remove the fuse from the fuse box where you'll be placing your "add-a-circuit." Place your radar detector connection that you just created in the number one slot. Take the second fuse that came with your "add-a-circuit" and place it in the number two slot.

  • Figure 9. Pull out the fuse from the slot you'll be using.
  • Figure 10. Place your "add-a-circuit" into the number one slot.

Step 6 – Connect your black ground wire

Locate a bolt that is connected to the frame of your vehicle. Connect your black ground wire to the bolt, which will ground your radar detector, and reach it back to your car.

Step 7 – Turn on radar detector

Have fun and, as one very famous police sergeant used to say, "Let's be careful out there."
