Ford Mustang V6 and Mustang GT 1994-2004: How to Repair Convertible Top

The convertible on your 1994 to 2004 Ford Mustang might need repair, as excess wear and tear appears on the surface over time.

This article applies to the Ford Mustang V6 and Mustang GT (1994-2004).

Tears, split seems, excess wear, cracks, and holes can crop up on your convertible top at any time. If you're lucky, you will notice the damage before water leaks begin to occur. Water leaks can be especially damaging if the water is allowed to soak into your carpets, seating and upholstery without properly drying. If the leaks allow for substantial water to enter your 1994 to 2004 Ford Mustang, you could be facing damage to your radio and other electrical components. In some cases you can fix smaller tears and other surface damage; however, generally speaking, you won't want to damage your convertible top by attempting a repair that is far beyond your skill level. Let's go over your best options!

Material Needed

  • Vinyl repair glue

Step 1 – Locate the leak

  • There are a number of ways for you to go about doing this: You can visually inspect your convertible top for punctures and other wear and tear, or you can follow the trail of water that has passed through your convertible top and into the interior of your Mustang.
  • The accumulation of water along your floors, seats, dashboard or rear deck are common spots for leaks to appear; however, leaks can appear (and damage) any part of the interior of your passenger cabin.
  • Be sure that you locate and repair all leaks or impeding leaks due to excess wear and tear.

Step 2 – Apply a repair product to small tears

  • For smaller jobs, it's recommended that you use a repair product such as VLP Vinyl/Leather Repair. At a cost of around $7 per 1-ounce tube, you can repair holes, tears and splits in vinyl, including the convertible top on your Ford Mustang.
  • Consider this a temporary fix for small jobs only.
  • Results should be favorable, as these products are designed to blend well with all colors. The product itself is clear in color.
  • There is no need for heat, as the these products fuse vinyl right there on the spot without the need for a change in temperature.
  • Allow the product to harden before taking your Mustang for a spin.

Step 3 – Have your convertible top professionally repaired

  • For most major damage, it's recommended that you have your car serviced at an auto body shop that specializes in convertible tops.
  • Doing so could save you in larger costs down the road, if you are unable to complete the repair on your own, which is likely if the repair is substantial.
  • Ask for a quote before having any repair work done and keep a copy of all warranties on file until they expire or are no longer active.
