This article applies to the Ford Mustang V6 and Mustang GT (1994-2004).

You've spent a lot of good money on keeping your Pony in good shape, keeping it looking fast and full of muscle. Well, what looks good should sound good too, so let's drop in a set of new speakers in order to get you grooving to some new sound. Now, cruising on road trips or going on dates—especially to the drive in—will be all the better. Your life should have a soundtrack, so let's get the cruising and jamming part of that soundtrack installed.

Materials Needed

  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Torx driver set
  • Trim and molding tool set
  • Socket wrench set
  • Slotted pry bar

Step 1 – Remove button panel from door and door panel

Using the pry bar from your trim and molding tool set, pop off the button panel from the door arm rest. Then remove the push pin from the front of the door panel and the screws holding the panel in. Pry off door handle panel. Unplug all of the wires and just lift up on the door panel to remove.

Step 2 – Remove old speaker and install new ones

Remove the four screws holding in the old speaker. You can use wire connectors or solder the wires to the new speaker. The green/black wire goes to the positive contact. Attach the new speakers back into the door.

Pro Tip

If you are going to solder the wires to the speakers, you can mount the speaker backwards to the door to hold the speaker while you solder the wires onto the speaker.

Step 3 – Remove rear speakers and replace with new speakers

First, remove the three 8mm screws holding the trim. Next, remove the two push pins holding the rear carpet panel. Pull on the carpet panel from the side to remove. There are six screws holding in the sub box; remove them now, but be careful because there is nothing to hold the sub box up after you remove it. Now, remove the old speakers from the sub box and replace with the new speakers. You will need a Torx driver for this.

Pro Tip

Have a friend hold the sub box while you remove the screws.

Step 4 – Reinstall sub box and all panels

Working backwards, reinstall the sub box first, then all of the panels, installing the last removed panels first. It should all go back nice an tidy.

Pro Tip

Have a friend help you with that sub box. It will be very hard to hold and reinstall all on your own.
