Ford Mustang V6 and Mustang GT 1994-2004: How to Replace Stereo

There is always a better stereo system out there for the Ford Mustang. Here's how to replace your stereo all on your own.

This article applies to the Ford Mustang V6 and Mustang GT (1994-2004).

The Ford Mustang comes with a decent stereo. However, there is always better systems out there. Whether you want a stereo with a CD, an AUX connection, or even a USB, there is something for everybody. Once you purchase your stereo that is compatible with your car, follow the instructions below to install it on your own.

Materials Needed

  • 9/32" socket
  • Ratchet
  • Extension
  • Small flat head screwdriver

Step 1 – Remove the shift lever trim

Just using your hands and fingers, gently pry up the shift lever trim and un-clip it from the fasteners holding it to the car.

Pro Tip

You will need to turn the ignition to ON so you can move the shift lever out of the way.

Step 2 – Remove the cigarette lighter connector

Use a small screwdriver or similar tool to undo the electrical connection to the cigarette lighter.

Step 3 – Remove the panel climate-control enclosure

Similar to removing the shift lever trim (gently with your hands and fingers), pry up around the climate-control enclosure, u-nclip it and remove it from the car.

Use a small screwdriver or similar tool to unfasten the climate-control electrical connections.

Step 4 – Remove two bolts

Use your 9/32" socket, your extension and your ratchet to remove the two bolts on the bottom that secure the stereo to the car.

Step 5 – Remove the stereo

Grasp the stereo to pull it toward you and out of the car.

Step 6 – Disconnect the stereo and install new stereo

Remove the electrical connectors from the back of the stereo.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions to install the new stereo, including mounting and electrical connections.

Step 7 – Install new speakers (optional)

Some Mustang owners want to upgrade the speakers for a fuller sound and more clarity. Many owners suggest using the stock wires and splicing into them, if needed. But you may want to install new wiring depending on the number of speakers and their configuration, including amplifiers. If you will be installing new speakers, it will take eight hours to complete.
