It's inevitable that the light bulb that illuminates the license plate on your 2005 to 2014 Ford Mustang V6 or Ford Mustang GT will eventually need to be swapped out for a fresh ones. Doing so is easy, however, and does not require professional expertise, as is the case with other repair jobs involving exterior car components. Best of all, you won't need any specialized tools or knowledge to complete this project. Once your new bulbs are installed, you can enjoy this incredible sports car, knowing your license plate bulbs are functional and bright. Let's get started!

Materials Needed

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Fresh bulbs

Step 1 – Pop out the light holder

You might have heard other DIY-ers say you'll need to "unscrew" the light holder to swap out your light bulbs. That isn't exactly correct. What you will need to do is remove the two plastic pins that hold the light holder in place using a Phillips screwdriver; however, you won't be "unscrewing" it in the traditional sense of the word. You will simply be easing it out of its location once it is loose enough to do so.

  • Using the screwdriver, turn each plastic pin until you are able to reach under the head of each pin using your fingernail.
  • Pull it out using your fingernail.
  • Do the same for the other plastic pin.
  • Once both pins have been removed, pop out the light holder.

Step 2 – Swap out your old bulbs

Unscrew your old light bulbs and replace them with a pair of fresh ones. We recommend upgrading to LED bulbs. Not only do LED bulbs last longer, but they also producer greater illumination, so other motorists can clearly see your license plate at night. Choose from a variety of colors and intensities.

Step 3 – Test your new LED bulbs

Reinstall the light holder to your car, and then climb inside the passenger cabin and start your engine. Check that your new LED bulbs work properly. If they do not, check that each bulb is securely and firmly in place.
