You can quickly and easily remove the rear bumper reflector(s) on your 2005 to 2014 Ford Mustang.

This article applies to the Ford Mustang V6 and Mustang GT (2005-2014).

The stock bumper reflectors are orange and stick out like a sore thumb. This is an aesthetic concession that can be easily remedied on the Mustang. Whether you want to paint-match the reflectors, or just black them out, you need to know how to remove them first.

There is no real reason why you would waste money going to see a professional when all the tools and materials you'll need to complete the job are right there in your own garage. Removing rear bumper reflectors is one such job. Best of all, you'll only need one easy-to-use tool and a microfiber cloth to protect your paint. Here's how to complete this easy do-it-yourself project in less than 10 to 15 minutes tops.

Materials Needed

  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Microfiber cloth
  • VHT Nite-Shade (optional)

Step 1 – Insert your flat head screwdriver

Before getting started, it's important to note it's not necessary to remove your rear bumper to take out your rear bumper reflector(s).

  • Insert your flat head screwdriver into one side of the reflector; it's preferable that you choose the side closest to the front of your Ford Mustang.
  • It's recommended that you cover your flat head screwdriver in a microfiber cloth to prevent the edge from scratching your paint while you pry out your rear bumper reflectors.
  • Work the flat head screwdriver back and forth using a steady motion.
  • It's not necessary to exert a great deal of force here. Simply apply enough pressure to make some leeway with your flat head screwdriver.

Step 2 – Add some pushing action

  • Push the opposite side down (the side nearest to your rear bumper, or the rear of your trunk).
  • This will help the rear bumper reflector to loosen and pop out. However, you're not done yet.
  • Add some pressure, holding down your weight, as you push down on the reflector.

Step 3 – Release the clip

  • Release the retaining clip, then go ahead and pull out the rear bumper reflector using your hands. You shouldn't need to exert any force here.
  • Pull out the reflector.
  • Be sure to protect it in a clean microfiber cloth if you need to set it down for a moment.
  • You might want to spray your rear bumper reflectors with VHT Nite-Shade for added brilliance and shine.
  • Once you've done what you need to do, just pop the reflectors back in place, easy as that.
