View Full Version : PROJECT FACE LIFT (BEWARE 56K)***FINISHED!!!***
5.0stanger 01-05-2008, 07:00 PM Okay, here is a start to a few month long project where I plan on taking my alright LX and turning it into a 10...at least on the out side. The plan is to have it sprayed in April when it get warmer and I can drive/tow it to the body shop. I am putting new paint on and I am going all out on it since I will be changing color. It will be a burnt orange color, with black molding and black stripe on the hood. Here are my starter pictures where I started tearing it down. I already had the 1/4 windows out and all the window trim off.
Here is what it looked like when I started

I will be putting in a Cobra grill insert, here is what I had to do to make it fit...
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j54/50stanger/paint/DSCF2339.jpg
Here are all my problem areas...reason for the new paint...rust!! sucks I will be cutting it all out and replacing with replacement panels/fresh steel.
Passenger side, behind the door...(on the seam of the rocker..)

getafewlives 01-05-2008, 07:05 PM Looks good. Is that the stock air silencer?
65coupe88hatch 01-05-2008, 07:08 PM nice to see im not the only one with rust in all those places....now when you go to fix it what are you going to do? you mentioned new metal are you just going to get the same guage steel and weld a new piece into place? im curious as to how your gonna go about fixing it. im going to start mine in the spring (too cold around here)
rust_stang 01-05-2008, 09:08 PM Cool hope it turns out great for you!!

It looks like the March ram air... you can see the inlet under the bumper in one of those shots.

I have actual patch panels I got from a parts car for a majority of the areas. If I need more than I have, I will try and get some sheetmetal around the same thickness and fab up some patch panels. They will all be welded into place.
bikeboy587 01-06-2008, 02:30 AM Thats a cool color your changing it too but I REALLY like you current color combo

Yeah when i finally start mine im going to have to get sheet metal since i dont have a parts car to steal stuff from.
HACKGT350 01-06-2008, 12:26 PM i love the blue and black you have i cant believe your making such a huge change in color. btw i have the same tires as you they are pretty nice never had a problem with them and they hold up nice to the burn outs

That they do....I have put about 8,000 miles on those tires plus a bunch of brakestandin, 2nd gear burnouts:D
About the color...I went back and forth a lot and I realy like the color I have right now, but I didn't want to drop a few grand into paint and have just a cleaned up version of what I already had. I want it to be like a new car, it has been 5 years with it, time for a change.
HACKGT350 01-06-2008, 12:42 PM haha i wish i could change my paint ever 5 years lol. yeah i have about 8k on my tires and they still look new amazingly
5.0stanger 01-06-2008, 12:47 PM I don't plan I doing it again, but if I do, the body will be straight.
HACKGT350 01-06-2008, 12:53 PM i have all the same rust as you only a lot worse im just getting through this winter then moving back home after i get out of school. when i get home im gunna buy a beater put the stang in the garage and its all coming apart. engine and trans are coming out all the suspension gunna get done new motor and sent out for body work and paint
50Stocker 01-06-2008, 02:33 PM If you are spending all that money and time getting the outside right you need to pull that motor and get the engine bay sprayed the same color and do the rest of the undersided areas as well. Nothing looks worse than skimping there...
86_GT_Mustang 01-06-2008, 03:06 PM Sux about the rust that will take some time.. but looks like its in great shape.

Thanks man! I am excited and disappointed about the the change at the same time...it is kinda bitter sweet. I was really worried that if I tried to keep the same color (it isn't factory) I would get something close but not the same and hate it. I chose that orange color about 3 years ago, or at least it was in the running;)

5.0stanger 01-07-2008, 06:49 PM Here is some more that I did tonight.....pulled the dash, door panels, headliner, sunroof, spoiler and tail lights. I started to pull the rearbumper, but my kids came out so I had to quit[:@] I am going to pull the doors sometime this week, then the hood. I am going to paint the inside of the car, that is why I am taking thr interior all out. I will also start stripping the engine bay to paint as much as I can. I eventually plan on pulling the engine and hiding all the wires and smoothing it out, but I want to rebuild the motor when I pull it so I only have to have it out once....so this will have to do for now. Enjoy

5.0stanger 01-12-2008, 07:27 PM Okay, I made some more progress today. I got the doors stripped out(glass removed, latches, door handles but I left the regulators in) I got the rear bumper off, and the rest of the interior out. No huge discoveries, but we did find some filler on the passenger side where we started sanding. Looks like I found out why my car has been repainted. Looks like someone swiped the side of the car into something, nothing major, but just a little extra we didn't know of. I also found a little more rust in the front wheel well where the air box goes thru...not sure how I am going to fix that yet. I also noticed I has some surface rust on most of my seams, but a wire wheel and a good primer will take care of that. Here are the pictures, I will describe as I go
This is how it sets now

LOL! Well it looks like you are taking the right steps! I am impressed by how fast you are working! That's great. Cannot wait to see the finished product. BTW: I love the color you chose. There is a notch in my town with a similar color, and it is simply stunning. Good luck bro!
5.0stanger 01-19-2008, 10:21 AM Well, I bought the stuff to prep my body with. I got some 80 grit, 180 grit and 400 grit 6" for the DA, then I got 180 grit and 320 grit for the long board. I also got some fillers and glaze. Then I got a gallon of wax and grease remover, some 3M scuff pads to prep with and some mixers and spreaders. All together I had over $300 just into this stuff and I got the good buddy discount.....the money really goes fast. Hell, I have close to $400 into the other things like new door handles, hindge/bushing sets, screws, rivits, misc trim peices, cobra grille, weather stripping, new badging and more stuff I can't rember. I will have more progress pictures today...the heater is running in the garage right now getting ready for it.

+1, I was told the only thing solid motormounts are good for is a drag car... otherwise you'll rattle yourself to death.
Prothane polymounts are what I have on the t-top project well worth the hundred bucks or whatever they were.... I got them on sale

Ok, but unless you have the engine balanced perfectly it could get pretty bad. Whatever you do, don't get solid trans mounts also.
5.0stanger 01-19-2008, 04:31 PM I'm not worried, but thanks for the concern. No solid trans mount either.
cleanfitty 01-21-2008, 09:35 PM Are you going to spray it yourself in the garage or are you going to have it transported to a paint shop?

I am having it professionallysprayed at a body shop, and they guy helping with the body work does it for a living too.
5.0stanger 01-27-2008, 05:54 PM Alright, here is an update.(no pictures, nothing great to show yet)
I amhaving good progress. I had the glass removed and we proceeded to sand the rest of the car down. We started with the filler on the rear quarters, got started on cutting rust out....basically everything is in a tweener stage. I also got the front suspention taken out so I can get the undercoating scraped out of the wheel wells, so they are ready to paint. I got the radiator out and the front light harness out of the way.
On another note, I removed the K member so I could put a new pan gasket in. I had the K member blasted and painted then reinstalled, painted the oil pan and reinstalled with a new gasket, and cleaned every thing else up. I also put on the new motor mounts.
I is comming along...stay tuned for more updates and pictures.
86HOGT 01-27-2008, 07:46 PM Very deec! I will warn you even if you may already know. The hatch is/will be worse than it is. I had mine off last winter and had about the same amount of bubbles and would've ended up having to patch 12 different spots with new metal. Then I got a fiberglass one which is bitter sweet. It won't rust but the hassle and fitment isn't like the steel. I still have the steel one bare and would like to repair it some day. If you can spray some rust proofing inbetween the sheet metal halves of the hatch either through the holes that you're going to patch or the key hols etc..
Looking good. Makes we want to do mine even though it's not rusty but has been painted 4 times cause something lifted when it was painted so now it's too thick and whill eventually chip. But it still looks good.
Keep up the good work!

Your right, it was worse than I thought and it would be nice to buy a new one, but it just isn't in the budget. I picked up a hatch a couple years ago that was solid on the outside corners, but rusted in the center.Mine is the opposite so I am going to us the new one for parts to fix my old one. I hope it will work out, and if it doesn't I will fix it up the best we can, paint it and keep any eye out for a clean hatch, but I think I can save it. Good idea on the rust paint...maybe I will use some kind of rust encapsulater paint.

capri debris 01-28-2008, 08:13 AM Been watching this thread and it brings back memories of doing the bodywork on my project. It's the most thankless part of any build. Goes really slow and is hard on the hands, back and patience... seems like it takes forever. However, when it's done, the payoff in doing it right is well worth the effort. Keep up the good work.
Also, where are you storing all the parts that are coming off the car? That was a big problem for me... finding room for all the stuff taken off. And of course, I'ma pack rat and never get rid of anything, so it all starts to pile up in no time.

Your right, it is slow and doesn't show alot of gain arfter the initial tear down. The thought on how nice it will be weather anyone sees it or not is the driving force. You were actually part of my inspiration on this project, thanks for following my mini resto, I have been watching your weekly.
As far as storing the parts, I have an attic above my garage that is packed full of parts....it is hard to believe the amount of things that come off and how much space they take up....I hope I don't have to take anything else up there.

5.0stanger 02-10-2008, 03:15 PM Well, my car is officially rust free now. I have the patch panels fit and started welding them in on the hatch( I cut the rust out of the inside of the hatch too). I have the passenger side 1/4 all welded it, just need to grind the welds down and I have the driver side 1/4 patch made, just need to weld it in.
We also started on straitening out the doors, so by next weekend they will be ready, then all that is left is the engine bay, bumpers, wingand both fenders. We are going to try and have it in primer by early next month, thenI will paint the interior black, then we will paint the jambs, under hood and under hatch and start reassembly for the rest of the paint by early april....I can't wait to finish.
Here are the pictures.....

Congrats on the progress. I cannot wait to see it all done.
Thanks, me either....it is a lot of work.
91hatchgt 02-10-2008, 03:34 PM It sure looks like it. Makes me happy to live in So cal, where it rains like 10 days a year. :D
FuzzyDiceRule 02-10-2008, 03:37 PM amen to that, pisses you off when it does rain tho...
5.0stanger 02-10-2008, 03:48 PM I'm a little jealous of you MF'ers.....(you pick with MF you would prefer:D)
aode08 02-10-2008, 03:52 PM I did the same to my fox, it took me two months of pain, sore muscles, cuts/ bruses all over and late nights.
Your using power tools, I used my bare two hands. Hatch/ had no rust, I would get a fiberglass hatch if it came down to it later.
Rear Quarters and Rusty Lowers, ETC, I got a roll of aluminum for $10 from my scrap yard in new shape. All of those areas treated with a Anti Rust Zinc Primer before fiber glass.
Underbody, blasted and scaled, then 3 coats of Rubberized UnderCoat, to prevent any rust from ever forming at least 20 years.
After all in primer, wet sanded the entire car with 3 light grit sand sponges for a week throughou the day, using distilled water.
I used Fiberglass, its takes forever to sand, but holds up very strong and does not stress crack easily.
My goal is to never have to go this again, for at least another 20 years:D

LOL. Yeah we have been having those storms the last couple weeks, and it pisses me off. I like to be able to drive with my windows down. Luckily that will probably be the last rain we see until next year. THANK GOD!
What part of CA are you located Fuzzy?

The only power tools I am using is a DA sander and cut off wheel. And after the initial sanding, it will all be done with blocks to make it straight as an arrow.
As far a filler goes, I am using Duraglass(fiberglass filled type body filler) on the welded area's or where I have to do some filling, then I am using a light body filler over that to smooth everything out. Then I am using a glaze type filler to fine tune anything. I am using all mild steel (not aluminum) on my filler patches because I want to weld them inand coating them with a good weld thru primer(not sure what is in it, but it wasn't cheap....one can was 15 bucks)
I am also sure we will have many hours into blocking our high build primer to make it perfect. Try doing all this in the cold of winter and after working 60 hours a week...not fun but it will be worth it.
cholericfc 02-10-2008, 05:39 PM I definitely STILL have the worst rust on my 90.... my quarter panels will need new ones from another stang to be cut/welded.....
leaking quarter windows and a dent that was bondo filled concealed with paint, that finally cracked open over the last 2years.... its a shame.
5.0stanger 02-16-2008, 06:22 PM Alright, made more progress today and in the past week. I finished welding all the patches, filling all the little holes from when my car was rust proofed/undercoated (lots of them in the door jambframe and hatch area). I also filled the seatbelt lock releases that are in the rear of the door jamb. I bought some black seatbelts from a newer stang and they didn't have the release, different style. Here are the pictures.....
Got the fenders sanded and filled where they needed it. Mainly getting the stone chips out of them.

And here is how it sits now...getting close to primer....

Alright, here is a question I have been tossing around, maybe you guys can help me decide. I was kind of thinking about getting rid of the wippers and smothing over where they come thru in the cowl. Do you thing it would be cool or just a PITA. The car wont be driven in the rain, and if I get cought in it, I will use rain X on the glass. Shave them or save them??

capri debris 02-16-2008, 11:15 PM I don't envy you... your car had alot more rust than mine did. I know how much work it was getting mine rust free, so I know you have been working your tail of getting yours ready for paint. What you have done, though, is very impressive. Looks like you know what you're doing when it comes to patching with sheet metal. Hats off to you!!! That's gonna be one helluva sick ride when you're done. You've got a long road to travel yet... but MY GOD it's so freakin' satisfying when you get to the point that I'm at in my build. If I had it to do over or the money to use, I would have bought a new hatch. If you can see rust on it, there will be twice as much that you can't see. I have probably 10 hours into my hatch right now and probably another 5 till it is done. It really helped that I had another hatch that was rust free in the spots that mine was rusting. They can be fixed, but I know I will see rust in my hatch again one day(rust on the inside you can see, and what encapsulater wont get too will pop out)so I am on the look out for another.

WhiteWindsor 02-29-2008, 11:28 AM WTF!! I'm at a loss for words. Was there a special on orange paint?
5.0stanger 02-29-2008, 08:13 PM Well, I haven't had a lot of time these past couple of weeks to work on the car, but I did manage to paint the engine bay. I did it in flat black. I wanted to paint it to match the car, but I want to do it right, smooth the bay and all and I didn't figure I had the time nor the patience to do it right now. I plan on pulling the motor next winter to build it up, so i will just do it then The black doesn't look bad at all IMO.

I also got around to making some stands. I was going to buy a pair, but the damn things are $35 a piece, I made a pair for $25 and they look just like the store bought ones. I also made a stand to hang things from out of some old PCV I had laying around.

More updates soon to come, thanks for looking.

We have final, or close to final coats of bondo on ready to sand, the doors are ready for new seam sealer(the hatch is close to follow) getting the fire wall smoothed for paint, got the cobra grill insert glued in and started on the smoothing. It is getting boring for me to watch and I can only imagine you guys, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Here are some pictures, enjoy if you want to:D

I know and I hate it. I was going to fill the hole, but I am not ready to tackle straigtening out a whole roof. I will have to deal with it till next time I paint, if ever.
Filling in the Mustang on the front bumper was such a bish to get it to flow on my car haha. One word of advice, make sure you go over where the fender flares out on the quarters in the corners to make absolutly positive that they dont have sand scratches in them! I thought I was good till I washed the car:(

5.0stanger 03-05-2008, 09:42 PM I got my coil over put on. It took a little doing to get them to work with the "cough" stock "cough" C/C plates but I got it done good. I had to make some new bushings, cut down the stock spacer to accomodate the new spacer that came with the coil over, cut the bell off the bottom of the C/C to clear the spring. It was defintly not a bolt on thing in my case. When the budget allows, I will get some good C/C plates. You can't tell in the picture, but everything has been sand blasted, primered and painted before I put it back on(like K member, control arms, spindles, dust sheilds....I was busy) ......body work makes a lot of dust!

I will probably post up some more pictures sometime this weekend...it depends on what gets done and what can be seen. I thinkI will be really close. I have been farting around with it, but it is hard to see progess.
On another note, I picked up my paint.....it cost a little more than quoted...$500 rather than the $400 I was told and I still have to buy sealer, etching primer, and black base paintfor my hood/moldings. I don't expect that to cost more than$100, but I am still within my budget so it is all good.

5.0stanger 03-15-2008, 06:09 PM Made good progress today. Got all the body work done for the most part...I think we are done with spreading bondo, now just have to finish sand it all with some 180 grit...maybe 220. I got the rear bumper broke down and some filler on there to fix the little imperfections, just have to sand it yet. Got the spoiler ready to prime, along with the roof. The quarters are about licked, just need some finishing sanding. All I have to do now is all the jambs, under hood, under hatch, under doors, and a little on the front fenders. Here are the pictures....
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j54/50stanger/paint/DSCF2553.jpg

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j54/50stanger/paint/DSCF2545.jpg
Here is the underside of the hatch. I finished welding the patched in on the underside now that I have it off, then I used some duraglass to fill the welded areas.....now I just have to sand it out. If you look thru the holes, you can see where I welded the patches in. I have to spray some etch primer in there then a rust encapsulater to finish that up. I also wire wheeled all the seam sealer out so I can put some fresh stuff on, but I will also have to etch prime that area also first.

kilgorq 03-19-2008, 06:59 PM Love the destination color. Good work It looks like you are making good progress.
nacanitihs 03-19-2008, 09:20 PM are you painting the moldings the same color or are you painting them black like before? and are you going with the same hood scheme or all orange?
5.0stanger 03-20-2008, 11:02 AM I will be painting the molding black and keeping the same hood theme. The moldings will all be gloss black to match the hood. Then the mirrors will be satin black, along with the window trim and door frames. My mind still can be changed though if you guys have a better idea....
greenstreak9205 03-20-2008, 11:45 AM you should put on those chrome fender lip things[8D]

Thanks, IAM a little afraid.....but I know it will be fine;). It is just so slow only being able to get out there one or 2 days a week.
greenstreak9205 03-20-2008, 02:37 PM well i think most of us are glad you grew outta that;)
5.0stanger 03-23-2008, 09:47 AM Alright, being a holiday weekend, I only had a couple hours to work on the stang. I may have more time later today, but for now, this will have to do;)
Alright, I sanded down my duraglass on the inside of the hatch...looks pretty good IMO, now I just have to seam seal it.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j54/50stanger/paint/DSCF2562.jpg
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j54/50stanger/paint/DSCF2563.jpg
I then finished up my rear bumper by sanding the filler off it. Then I started on finishing the front bumper, first knocking down the bumper glue holding in my insert so I can mold it smooth with filler, then I DA'ed it with 180 grit to break it down.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j54/50stanger/paint/DSCF2558.jpg
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j54/50stanger/paint/DSCF2559.jpg
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j54/50stanger/paint/DSCF2564.jpg
After that I went on to wraping up my fenders for primer. I had to scuff the under hood area, wheel wells, and the little crevasis the 180 missed. When doing so I found a little surface rust....
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j54/50stanger/paint/DSCF2560.jpg
So I got out my disk sander and started grinding the rust off...it was pretty easy to remove and I was relieved I didn't have to cut and weld more:D
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j54/50stanger/paint/DSCF2561.jpg
I guess I will throw this in too...last week I got my new hidden antenna since I filled the original. To fill my time during the week, or break time at work I made up a really basic alternator braket. It isn't done yet, but it already looks much better than the big deal from the factory. I also removed my smog pump eliminator pulley (for sale now if anyone is interested) and my polished tensioner. I think it will look better more cleaned up. I will need a 63" belt now.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j54/50stanger/paint/DSCF2565.jpg
Well, that is it for now...maybe more later.
88ttop5.0 03-23-2008, 10:46 PM Great progress... question about your engine bay painting, i painted mine with a semi gloss black but i saw in the pictures it didint look like you removed the break booster, or did you and then reinstall it? getting mine out is a pain in the ass and has put a hault on finishing the bay. Btw that orange is going to be awesome!

No, I didn't remove it for 2 reasons: 1, I plan on painting the bay to match so i didn't want to take the time now, then again later...so I just masked it off. 2, it looked like a pain and I was feeling lazy about[8D]
golden_eye 03-24-2008, 05:40 PM I can't believe I missed this until now. Very interesting thread and great job with the body work and pictures so far! Keep it up :D
5.0stanger 03-26-2008, 09:41 PM Went out to the shop for a little tonight....got some filler on the front bumper and got a final coat on the firewall. Planning on all day on Saturday...we will see how it goes, I will update this weekend.

Skyler5.0 03-26-2008, 10:14 PM Looks good. I'm doing the same thing as we speak, yours is a lil bit more involved as far as the body work. I'm replacing body pannels and interior stuff, mostly motor work suspension upgrades.
Keep up the good work![sm=smiley20.gif]
5.0stanger 03-29-2008, 05:27 PM Today was so nice outside we rolled it out in the driveway and went over it all in the sun light and we liked what we saw......all the body work is DONE!!! Finally....
I blew all the dust out of it...I bet my neighbors thought my house was burning:D...there was a lot of dust in there.
Now what is left is to scuff the undersides of the doors, hood, and hatch, then to finish up the door jambs and hatch area. Then we will hit it with 400 grit with the DA then it will be ready for the first round of high build primmer. So in a couple more weeks I might be able to show you guys a picture of the car all in one color.
Here are a couple shots of the work today...the guy in the picture is my cousin, the grade A body guy...enjoy

I'm torn as to what color to paint mine when it comes that time.
I love the color of orange you chose as well as the 350z Daytona blue, and the Chrome yellow.
Looking good so far!!!!
QatarStang 03-30-2008, 09:10 AM Can't wait to see the car all finished
allingeneral 04-03-2008, 01:27 PM You should forget the orange and paint the rest of the car flat black to match your engine bay! :)
What did you do with all the bolts, nuts and other hardware to keep them straight when you tore the body off? One thing I always have trouble with, no matter what project I take on - keeping hardware situated so I can put it back together. If I had my car apart like this for several months, I would never get it back right! :-/
5.0stanger 04-03-2008, 05:15 PM I could go flat black.....it would be really straight:D
I bagged all my nuts and bolts and marked where they went. Still, I think it might be a pain to figure it all out.
5.0stanger 04-05-2008, 06:53 PM Alright, so after just about 3 months of body work and tearing it apart, we have finally finished one part of the journy, it is all DA'ed out, scuffed and ready to primmer. Next weekend we will start doing the primer.
You know, I look back at the pictures and I guess I really have come a long way..the funny part, the car wasn't even really that bad. I feel good about things and I am glad I didn't rush it, and I am not going to start now. I will try and get it to the paint booth this month, but we will see....I want to finish it so I can drive it:Dthe weather is nice. I even go a little sun burn on my head today.
All I have for pictures is what my wife took of me and my cousin, so deal with it;) There isn't much to show ya anyway.(I am the sexy bald guy;):D)

5.0stanger 04-11-2008, 11:04 AM The stang is getting primer this Saturday for sure. I just about have it all masked off.....can't wait.....there will finally be a change in how it looks:D
5.0stanger 04-12-2008, 05:08 PM Well, got all the seams sealed(under doors, hatch and rear quarter areaby the new patch panels) and got it all primmed. I am pretty happy with how it all turned out so far. Wont be long now...just have to block it flat, paint the jambs and send it to the booth. Here is a link to my album...I didn't feel like shrinkin' all the pictures down to fit on here;)
http://s77.photobucket.com/albums/j54/50stanger/primmer/
BTW, the black paint on the primer is our guide coat for when we block it.
crueheadstang87 04-13-2008, 01:52 PM i see you are using guide coat on it. Goodj to see you are using it it will help you find all your low and high spots. alot of people just try to eyeball it and watch the orange peel in the primer. guide coat is they way to go. nice work and hope all goes well for you!

5.0stanger 04-19-2008, 11:16 PM It has been a pretty good week. I got most of the car blocked out and it is going well. I have the doors, hatch and rear bumper left to go. When I was blocking the rear quarters I was breaking thru to filler, meaning it wasn't very straight, and I wasn't really happy with the body lines on the quarters so I re did them today....about onther of 6 hours of filler and sanding. Also, when I primmed the front bumper I had a few pits show up, so I had to fill those and re prime that also. I got everything all re primmed now, so tommarow there will be more blocking.
Here are some pictures of the weeks work

kilgorq 04-20-2008, 12:03 AM Looks good.
Maybe you can help? I am repainting my truck and having problems with my primer going on right. It has a lot of orange peal and in spots it is going on like sand. I am pretty sure is has to do with my gun but what do you think. I am running my air at about 50 PSI. I have a standard Sharpe suction feed gun.
5.0stanger 04-20-2008, 09:29 AM I was running my gun at about 25 to 30 psi, so for starters you have to much psi. Primmer won't lay out and will have orange peal...it flashes really quick. That is the purpose of blocking it flat.
I would turn down you psi and slow down a little. Hold the gun about 6 to 8 inches from your car and see how that works.

Thanks.
You know, blocking the primmer is more stressfull than anything I have done so far...is really shows all the flaws. I probably have 15 to 20 hours if not moreinto just blocking, fixing things, re primming and blocking again and I'm not done yet. Probably only a few more hours if I don't run into anything else. All I have left to do is the passenger side rear quarter, both doors and the wing....getting close
crueheadstang87 04-21-2008, 07:36 PM i know all about blocking primer it Is very stressfull like you said. I have to do it all day long at work i work in a paint shop (unfortunateley a GM paint shop). Plus i have been blocking on my mustang for the past couple of months. i have been working on mine for about a year and a half or better now. hopefully mine will be flawless. or a close to flawless as i can get it. Keep up the good work and post some more pictures when you get her all trimeed out!

Thanks! I think we are going to try and spray the door jambs, under hood, inside of doors and the hatch area this weekend with color. After that we are going to reassemble it, then wet sand the primer for the paint....I talked to my painter and told him the first week of May to have it all sprayed and he said it sounds good...now I just have to get it done by then....might be the second week if things go like they have been.

5.0stanger 05-05-2008, 02:12 PM The paint was great, it covered in 2 coats, the clear looks awesome. I got it from my local body shop...just the brand they spray. I think it is Sikins or something like that....I can look if you want me to. The base was about $140 per quart, and the clear was around $120 for the kit gallon, sealer...not sure yet, my painer just gave it to me for now, and the primmer was around $100 for a kit gallon. I guess it is pretty good stuff.

Next week monday it will go to the booth. I just have to put it back together. I got the engine back together tonight and got it running. Next I will put the hinges back on the doors, put the latches and strikers on, get the hood hinges and latchback on, and the hatch hinges and latch on. This weekend my cousin is coming over to help put the hood, doors, and hood on. I am pretty pumped it see it coming to an end. Now I just have to remember how it all goes back together:D
cleanfitty 05-06-2008, 09:22 PM Thats nice work, and that is a good brand of paint. At the body shop I worked at many years ago, we used PPG, and I was never really impressed with it and then they switched over toSeikens and it was very nice.

5.0stanger 05-11-2008, 05:37 PM Well, after a week of trying to button everything up, we got it all put back together. I am really happy to see it mostly in one peice. I reblocked all the body lines with tape on them as a guide to keep them straight and I am pretty happy with how it turned out. All the body gaps look really nice too, better than before. All that is left to do is call my painter and find out what day he wants me to bring it to him. When it is gone, I will be putting on my new upholstery, door panels covers, redying misc interior parts (it wasn't originally black) taking all the tint off my glass before I put it back in so I can have it retinted....I still have a little bit of work, but I can see the end. Thats a lot of pictures....next time you see it, it will all be one color...how cool is that??!?!
5.0stanger 05-11-2008, 05:49 PM One last thing that I really need some opinions on, so please help me decide.
I am wondering if I should put the same black stripe on my hood...
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j54/50stanger/0123email.jpg
Another question, my side body moldings, I am going to keep them black for sure, but should I have them painted gloss black or go with the satin black that they are originally??
Help me decide please!!
primetime5.0 05-11-2008, 05:51 PM one or the other, dont do both
floodzilla 05-11-2008, 05:52 PM I really like the look of the stripe. you should paint that satin black as well as the molding. that would look sick!!

Well, the molding are going to be blackso no stripe? Or do you mean gloss black stripe=gloss moldings?

I thought the satin stripe, but I really would like it to be under the layer of clear(making it gloss)without a line where we had to tape it off for the mat clear.
Skyler5.0 05-11-2008, 06:13 PM Lookin good man! Looks like its comming along nicely. The paint should lay nice and smooth, im looking forward to seeing the color on it , i also like how you didn't paint the all of the engine bay. Gives the color to come into its own .....
Ihave been working on my car as well, still have a bit to do but hopping to have it on the road by saturday. As far as the redying mine im not going with the black im doing a darker grey with black headliner and black carpet it going to be 2 tone to break up the colors a lil bit . What type of dye are you using?

As far as they dye, last time I used the duplicolor vinyl dye and it worked good, but it was a little shiny. I think I am going to use Krylon plastic paint in a satin finish, I heard it works good....but I am not sure yet.
Good luck with your car. This summer I think I may take a cruise down to your area for Woodward...make a weekend out of it, we will have to meet up.

Agreed!I think doing the stripe in a satin or clear would look good. But with that color, doing the molding would be a bit much! On the other hand, doing the moldings and leaving the hood, i think would give the impression that something is missing,
5.0stanger 05-11-2008, 06:25 PM For my year car, the moldings only came in black. I think it would look funny if it didn't have the strip since I am so used to it, but I am worried it would look funny with it, or it may be too much
This is what it looked like before the stripe....looks better with it IMO when it was blue....

primetime5.0 05-11-2008, 06:26 PM sorry what I said was vauge, either do the hood and paint the moldings to match the car or do the moldings and leave the hood

Cool im using the duplicolor, it is a bit shiny but since i armoral my panels to give it that shine.I was ok with it.
as for when comming down here let me know man i'll look foward to it ..
Like said be B4,i have a long ways to go on my car.I got the saleen wing and it did not mach Any of the factory holes [:@].
So! this winter im going to take it apart, and tig weld all the holes in and make templet an make new holes , and im breaking the hole car down tomedia blast all the paint off, before the ppg onyx black and ppg concept clear go's on. As far as underneath go's the car has no rust so i think a satin look under there will be ok! The car only has 79k on it and was all original when i got it, so there were onlyminor dings and where someone side swiped it at my oldwork back in WA. Its a cali car so i was happy to find such a clean car , as you knowbeing from Michigan, its hard to find them that clean...

Yea i see what your saying. i painted my truck with rustoleum rattle cans in camo so i shouldnt even be in this conversation:D
USMC1775 05-11-2008, 07:08 PM I think gloss black is the only way, unless you were going for a kind of Mach 1 look
5.0stanger 05-11-2008, 08:46 PM Alright, I guess the only question now is "stripe or no stripe"
For some reason this is tougher than I thought...LOL
Stella94GT 05-11-2008, 08:50 PM stripe deffinitaly, the orange will look awsome with a black stripe.
gearbanger 05-11-2008, 08:53 PM lol your on your own..... it is a very hard decison. good luck lol........... and lookin good BTW
kilgorq 05-11-2008, 09:54 PM Looking GREAT. What is the colors name?
I am going to paint my truck similar to that with Burt Orange or Persimmon Base Coat with Yellow or Red pearl on top. Probably go with a ghost stripe on it. Just deciding what color pearl to use for the stripe. I am thinking Yellow pearl for the truck and Red pearl for the stripe. I am shooting for a sunset coloring effect.
Black Stripe = HAPPY HALLOWEEN.
But either black or white would look real good on it. I was going to do mine up about that same color with a black 70's mach 1 striping scheme. with the two stripes that wrapped down the fender and faded out back to orange as it got to the rear tires.
5.0stanger 05-12-2008, 08:39 AM The color is called Tangerine Pearl Orange...it is a Chrysler factory color.
Boss_Hotrod 05-12-2008, 10:47 PM Definitely go with the stripe. Ill soon be painting a satin black stripe on my brother's 03 if he can get the money rounded up.
FuzzyDiceRule 05-13-2008, 03:13 AM you can always just paint the car solid, see if you like it, then paint the stripe on, and if you dont like it, just repaint the hood, a little extra work, but w/e
why is it that chrysler has all the good colors?
Chrysler Inferno red is teh sex
98MustangGT46 05-13-2008, 03:26 AM I say go with the black stirpe again. It looks awesome.
5.0stanger 05-13-2008, 08:32 PM Thanks for all the input....I think I have decided.
I talked with my painter, he can't get me in till next week, so after that I guess you guys can see what I decided[8D]
The extra time is going to kill me[:@], but I guess I have time to finish up the interior.
Hollister Hoodlum 05-13-2008, 11:39 PM ewwww it looks horrible.
just kiiding:D it looks freakin sweet so far!
And i would keep both stripes, get them painted the same color... so it really pops ;) just my Opinion though!
5.0stanger 05-23-2008, 07:09 PM Still waiting to go to the painters....they are backed up[:@] They told me by the end of this week, but they never called me.....I am hoping it will be early next week.
But while waiting, I got my door panels recovered, painted some of my interior plastic, got most of my new upholstery on, and put on a new typhoon intake. I will get some pictures sometime and give you guys something to look at.;)
87notchproject08 05-24-2008, 11:50 PM glad to see how your project is progressing. I am starting my own soon and hope it progresses like this has. keep the photos coming!!! good luck!
BlessedHellride 05-25-2008, 12:31 PM Looking good Kyle. That's about the same color I purchased for my coupe a couple of months ago. If I get off my azz, I shouls have my car running this next weekend or so after I get home. After I get the enginedialed in to where I want it, then it's straight to the paint work. I will do the paint job from start to finish in just a few days. I was so tired of spending money at this project, I bought a cheap gallon kit off of Ebay for $235 delivered that included paint, reducer, clear and hardner. It will do for now and between my friend and myself, it will turn out good, cause my friend is a huge "ball breaker" from New York. He's old and grumpy to boot.(64yo)

Sounds good Big Chris, post up some pictures when you get it allfinished up! Hopefully I get mine done before yours.....if my painter doesn't hurry his ass up, I am going to rent a booth and do it myself. Reason I am waiting for him is because he will warranty and guarantee the paint to look good.
5.0stanger 05-26-2008, 06:46 PM Here is what I have doing to hold me over....
The rear seats look great, but the fronts are not as great, but they look good still. My lower seat cushions were pretty well shot and I don't feel like spending another 150 bones on them to make it look better right now...maybe in the future. I think steaming the seats will go a long way to straighten them out....we will see

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j54/50stanger/DSCF2687.jpg
The door panels...I bought the new recover skinsfrom CJ's for about $120, figured I would give them a try. The are a little tricky to put on, considering you have you dissemble the old panels, glue the and rivet them all together, and cut the holes in them, but I think they will look really nice in the car with some armor all on them. I also got new arm rest pads, window cranks, and handle bezels....they should look like new.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j54/50stanger/DSCF2691.jpg
I bought a Typhoon intake, just the satin one...figure I will paint it or polish it up one day. That install went pretty well. I had already port matched my heads to the stock lower intake gaskets so the ports were just the right size. The stock gaskets are about.100" smaller each ways than the 1250 felpro gasket(those are the ones you have to use), but the new intake came about .100" to .150"smaller then the 1250 felprogasket.Without the port matching, there would have been a big restriction in the flow....so if you want to run one with stock heads, keep that in mind.
Last year I made a custom TB spacer since I moved up to a larger TB to save me money(had a 70mm, went back down to a 65mm), well I made it about 74mm to give me room to work so I had to port match the upper plenum to match my spacer. They say the intake will take a 70mm TB, but I think you would have to port match to run that large of a TB, 65mm would be perfect and that is what I am running now. Please excuse the dirty engine bay, I can't clean it till after I get the car painted, and I can't wait!! BTW, I also bought a cheapo CAI off ebay to clean that area up a little.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j54/50stanger/DSCF2686.jpg
Here is a quick picture of the rear quarter plastic I painted satin black. They look really good, the picture doesn't do it justice....not to mention I was too lazy to move them to get a good picture;)

Skyler5.0 05-27-2008, 02:09 AM Looking good man . For the $$, I couldn't have gotten a good qualitly seat, and had the rears all redone also. I thought about it, but I wanted the stock look.

I am using Krylon Fusion satin black....seems to work good. Last time I used Duplicolor vynal/plasic dye, and that worked good, but it was too shiney and I don't think it held up the greatest......we will see how this stuff works out.
floodzilla 05-27-2008, 11:36 AM Yea i know what you mean, the stockers do look nice. I actually got some nice Kirkey seats for like 250 from ebay.
