If I get a new top on a car and seal it up good, will it break down quickly if it is not garaged?  How do these take the weather elements, and other factors like bird crap, tree sap/droppings etc.?

As ong as you keep it clean it should last 10-20 years

The 86 GT I had had the original top, and it was quite rough, but still in overall decent shape, and that thing was abused, sat out in the sun, rain, etc.

If you get a new top, and keep it clean, it should last a long time. If you're going to let it sit for extended periods, a good quality car cover is cheap insurance.

Thanks for the advice, but no this is not the same mustang.  A guy in my autobody class has one his friend is selling for $400.  He told me some of the problems, but I was just assuming on my own the top would probably need to be replaced.  I do have a car cover from another car but not sure if it would fit that or not.
