I bought a 97 GT coup for a project car and have a few questions; first the previous owner added
x pipe , removed the cats, cold air intake. All I have done so far is cosmetic stuff, I was wondering in small steps at a time what would be the best items to add , such as pulleys, intake manifold and such Also I was wndering what is the best tuner to purchase for a car that will gradually have more and more mods done to it? I was also wondering if the diagnostic function of the tuners work on any vehical or just the vehical it is assigned to?

PI swap then 4.10s

+1, and a tune also. Forget the other mods, they won't give you any power. After those two are done: shift kit, then some suspension.

^Save up for it. I did my PI swap for $700 and I got a lot of extra stuff to go with it (full PI swap kit, every gasket from the oil pan to valve covers, Melling oil pump, timing chain tensioners, water pump, etc).

Just keep looking around, I found a package deal. Someone bought all of the stuff and got rid of his car before he got a chance to put it on. I was waiting for 6 months until I found the deal I wanted.

I had a 96 GT auto and I wish I wouldn't have spent so much time on pissy little mods that made little to no difference.
If I had it to do over again this is what I would have done without wasting money on other crap mods:

4.10's
PI swap--at least do the intake and cams since that is where most of the power comes from but if you do the heads to go ahead and do stage 2 cams while you're in there
3800 stall converter from BC Automotive
Dyno tune

For a tuner-get a dyno tune and just use whichever the tuner uses. It will probably either be the Diablo or SCT.

And yes PI swaps are all over the place. I've seen complete PI swaps on the classifieds for $500. Heads usually are around $300 with cams and intakes are usually around $125.

definetly change heads and intake combo. Its my understanding that in 1997 the ports are very small compared to 1999 and up. car and driver had segment on this and showed the diffrence on the heads and the newer heads were twice the size. probably why 1997 only had around 220hp and 1999 to 2004 had 260hp. but if you going to do a head swap don't go with stock check out patiot heads. or any aftermarket heads and intake combo. But its all up to you and what you want out of it.

I paid 85 for my PI intake, 90 for my PI cams, 25 for my PI valve springs and new retainers, 85 for all of the gaskets required, new heater hose and valve seals, 52.90 for the coolant tube and water pump nipple, and 40 on oil and anti freeze. You just have to look around. People pay to much for a lot of this stuff. The valve spring install was a pita btw. I ended up pulling the motor.

Total - 377.90

Well worth every penny. Next....... 5 speed swap and the Sniper SF tuner

I wish I would have done the entire 31 spine and gears.  I'm regretting not doing them now.  If I had to do them over again I would have done them first.

I would be careful with patriot heads. They have had issues in the past with there heads. Do some research before you decide.
