I have a 1998 V8 4.6L gt automatic mustang and love it. On the other hand when I gun it I get much less power out of it than I might think. It is almost the same as my van. Is their anything that could be broken or worn down that could lower the power of the car. It seems to run fine but just is not pushin out as much power as I believe it can.

Do a Heads/Cams/Intake Swap on your car with a Newer Mustang GT. See, Pre-99 Mustangs are known as Non-Performance Improved, because of the restrictive H/C/I. Swapping out those parts should prove a solid 60+ Horsepower Gain.
Not bad for parts you can find in the Junkyard, eh?[8D]

+1
A PI swap should truly be your first mod in a 96-98.
Well yea, if money wasnt really an object then I would say f*ck stock and go with stage 2 heads, cams, and a nice intake. Unfortunatly, that isnt the case for everyone and he would be spending at least double the amount of money.
