- check engine light for 'lean fuel' (no matter what grade i use)
- in nuetral, from idle it will not pass 4500 rpm, i could probably hold my foot on the gas all day and it will not pass it, unless i take my foot on/off the gas a couple times, then it will hesitantly
- when going from a complete stop (or actually any time while driving) it will jump easily up to about 4000 and very slowly climb higher and it almost feels like its gasping for air (or gas)
- when i shift, it takes a second to accelerate.. i dont really know how to explain it, but its almost like it has a hesitation before it grabs the gear..
-alsowhen i shift,(this has only happeneda couple times), itll start pulling like i either am out of gas or i went into a gear i shouldnt have (like i should have shifted to3rd and i went to 5th), and the two times it did it, thats what i thought i did, went into a high gear by mistake so i immediately downshifted and it was jerking like it didnt have any gas, but i floored it and after about 3 seconds rpms soared and so did the car
the boyfriend drove it and said the clutch needs replacing, but thats not my problem with the hesitation, he says its some kind of fuel issue but he doesnt know where to start, hes a vw/mini trucker guy, not a mustang guy.. so i thought i might try to get some advice before we start spending money replacing things that dont need to be

it really could be several issues. i know when i have a problem that cant be singled out right away.. i start with the easiest/cheapest and work from there.. best bet is to do what was already suggested, change the fuel filter and clean the maf sensor. if that doesnt help, id maybe check o2 sensors..

an exhaust leak before or after the o2 sensor can cause it to lean out. a faulty sensor could do the same.. its not common.. but its not exactly rare. have you checked your pcv valve? all the lines running to the intake tubing both from the driver side bank and the throttle body?
EDIT: typo
