1970 Mustang Boss 302 Trans-Am Racer Up for Auction in August
Last week we told you about the 1965 Shelby GT350R being auctioned by RM next month, but it won’t be the only vintage Mustang race car up for sale in Monterey. Mecum has announced that a 1970 Mustang Boss 302 Trans-Am race car will be crossing the block at their auction that same weekend. One of four “body-in-white” shells left over from the 1970 season and one of three constructed by Bud Moore for the 1971 Trans-Am race season, this 1970 Boss 302 was driven by Peter Gregg and scored five podium finishes during that year. For 1972 the Boss 302 was sold to Marshall Robbins, who campaigned the car that season.
After retiring from Trans-Am this Boss 302 endured a fate similar to many race cars. It competed in SCCA racing for a few years in the late 1970s and early 1980s, then was restored in 1985 and went on the vintage racing circuit. It underwent another restoration in 1995 and has participated in vintage racing events since then.
So how much will this Boss 302 race car sell for? Well, this isn’t the first time the car has been up for auction, selling for $343,200 in 2003 and for $407,000 in 2009. We wouldn’t be surprised if the car has maintained its value since then.
