1964-2009 Ford Mustang Classic to Modern Engine History: Horsepower, Supercharged and Turbocharged

The 1964-2009 Ford Mustang has spent 42 years as one of the leading names in the American performance car market, and one of the best selling cars in US history.  While the sleek, sporty lines get the attention, the Ford Mustang never fails pack a strong-running engine. Ford also always offers at least one small, efficient, economical Mustang engine for those more concerned with the look of the Mustang than they are with brute performance. Here a brief overview of the engines offered over the years since the Mustang was introduced.

1964
Ford had no idea that the 1964 Mustang would be such a hit, so it was offered with only three engines:

-170 cubic inch inline 6, naturally aspirated, 1 bbl carbureted, 101 horsepower
-260 cubic inch V8, naturally aspirated, 2 bbl carbureted, 164 horsepower
-289 cubic inch V8, naturally aspirated, 4 bbl carbureted, 210 horsepower

1965
It did not take long for the Mustang to become popular, for which the
Ford Motor Company saw a need to make higher performance models: the
1965 Ford Mustang GT was introduced and racing legend Carroll Shelby
started making the famed Shelby Mustangs, beginning with the GT350.

The 1967 Ford Mustang brought about a new generation with a physical
redesign and the big block. Engine size and power would increase again
thanks to Carroll Shelby.

1968
The 1968 Ford Mustang introduced the United States to an engine that
would come to be known by a number and a letter (after a few decades):
the “five-o”. Intended to replace the 289, it was known as the 302
while in development.

The 1969 Ford Mustang experienced another refresh and introduced
several new trim lines: the Mach1 and the Boss lineup. This would be
the last year to offer a Mustang GT, as the Mach1 became the
introduction performance Mustang.

The 1971 Ford Mustang saw another redesign, while the Boss 351 replaced the Boss 302 and Boss 429.

1972
The 1972 Ford Mustang had to endure US Government implemented new
engine emissions regulations, which required engines be tested for
horsepower ratings under load of all accessories such as power
steering, the alternator, etc. This caused a drop in stated horsepower,
though the actual horsepower did not change much; it was just stated
differently. Nonetheless, the new restrictions negatively impacted the
sales of all performance cars, not just the Mustang.

The 1973 Ford Mustang marked the end of the first generation. When the
1974 Mustang was released, it appeared as though the Ford Motor Company
was no longer attempting to manufacture a performance car. The
performance-minded 1973 Mach1 Mustang experienced another drop in power.

1974
The 1974 Ford Mustangs hit the showroom floor as if it was a whole new
car, and so it was named the Mustang II. The Mustang II did not look
like its predecessor nor did it run like it either, mostly due to a
relatively weak engine lineup. The 1974 Mustang lineup lacked a
performance model once again, although there would be the Ghia, which
was just a luxury upgrade. The Mach1 returned, but without a
performance engine.

1975
The 1975 Ford Mustang went without a performance model as well, but

the 5 liter V8 was a welcome addition to the Mach1.

The 1976 Ford Mustang carried an implication that the Shelby had
returned with the Cobra II, adopting the roman sequence of the new
Mustang II. Unfortunately, there was still no high performance engine
offered; the Cobra II was basically an appearance package and the
engine offerings did not change.

The 1978 Ford Mustang was the final Mustang II, and the last year the
public had to tolerate low performance engines. The following year
introduced the most popular Mustang body, possibly ever.

1979
The1979 Ford Mustang introduced the Fox Body chassis, which, with a few
changes over the years, would remain the Mustang chassis all the way to
1993. It was during this time that the Mustang came to be known as the
“five-o;” though the Mustang II had the engine, this chassis made the
term famous. Furthermore, Ford offered an option in power with their
2.3L turbocharged 4 cylinder. This was also the year that Ford began
stating their engines sizes by liters rather than cubic inches. The
engines offered were available in all forms of the car, as there was no
GT, or similar performance model.  There was the Cobra, but it was
basically a trim package.

There were still no performance models offered in 1980, so once again
all engines were offered on all Mustangs sold.  The 5.0 liter engine
was not offered in 1980, but would return in a few years.  In its place
for the time being was a 4.2L engine that was less powerful.  In an
effort to make the automatic transmission Mustangs as quick as the
manual transmission models, the 2.3L and 3.3L Mustangs with auto
transmissions got a slight bump in bhp.

Again, no performance models and no 5.0L, and 1981 also saw the drop of
the turbocharged 2.3L.  Not a particularly exciting year for the
Mustang engine lineup.

Finally, the 5.0L would return, and this time it would stick around
until 1995, and this period was what cemented the 5.0L in motoring
history.  However, the addition of the Mustang GL, GT, and GLX hinted
at possible upcoming, performance Mustangs as were seen in the 60s and
70s.

The biggest news for the Mustang in 1983 was the long await return of
the convertible.  However, the engine lineup was also refreshed for
1983, and that refresh including the removal of the 4.2L and 3.3L, the
addition of a 3.8L V6 and a new turbocharged, fuel injected 2.3L, and
the 5.0L got a sizeable jump in power.

1984
1984 marked the (illegal) return of the GT350, as well as the
introduction of the SVO Mustang.  There were additional 5.0L engines
offered, now featuring fuel injection.  This year marked the
introduction of the Saleen Mustang, although it would be a while before
Saleen began making engine performance alterations.

The GT350 was gone in 1985, but the SVO returned.  There would be power
increases for the SVO 2.3L and the 5.0L HO motor, although the Turbo GT
wasn’t offered.

SVO.

While still based on the fox body chassis, the 1987 Mustang got a
fairly elaborate refresh, with a new sportier look, which yielded
better aerodynamics.  There would be only two engines offered, as the
only options were the base model, the GT, and the Saleen, although the
Saleen still used the basic GT engine.

There were very few changes for the Mustang in 1988, and none were made to the engine offerings.

1989
There were no changes to the Mustang or the engine lineup, but the Saleen models got their first increase in horsepower.

model, but the Saleen models got a few changes.  The base model 4
cylinders finally got fuel injection, but no gain in power.

By 1992, perhaps people had begun to grow bored with the Mustang, as
sales had been slumping for a few years.  The Saleen group did make a
few Mustangs in 1992, but none of the SC models were made.

This would be the final year for the popular fox body Mustang, and
there were several special edition Mustangs made for the final model
year of the fox body.  One of those special edition Mustangs came from
Ford’s recently developed “Special Vehicle Team”, who produced the 1993
Cobra R.

1994
This was the first year of the new Mustang chassis, named the SN95. 
There would be no more 4 cylinder Mustangs offered, and in its place a
V6 as the base model engine.  There were two different versions of the
5.0L for 1994; one for the GT, and one for the Cobra.  The Saleen
models got a big jump thanks to an entirely different engine.  Also for
1994, Roush Performance and Shinoda began offering modifications for
Mustangs, but they offered no different engines, and the modifications
could be applied to any model Mustang.

1995
This year, nothing changed for the base model of GT Mustangs.  Shinoda
and Roush continued offering handling and appearance upgrades, and the
Saleen lineup saw little change other than the drop of the V6 Sport. 
The big news was the release of the 1995 Cobra R from SVT.

This was the year that the performance car market saw another
disappearance of the 5.0L V8, and this time, it would be for good. 
Replacing it was the new 4.6L modular motor, and this marked the first
time that an overhead cam engine would grace a production Mustang. 
There was no more Cobra R, as it was a one year model.  The Roush, and
Shinoda models remained the same, but Saleen would mix things up a bit
with a big increase to the S351 power, the drop of the SR, and the
addition of the S281.  The V6 base model also got an additional 5
horsepower.

1997
In 1997, almost nothing changed in the world of the Mustang.  The
Saleen models were the same, as were the Roush and Shinoda models, and
the base, GT, and Cobra received no engine changes.

1998
The Mustang GT got 10 extra horsepower for 98, but the Cobra and V6
would remain the same in this, the last year of the SN95.  The Roush
and Shinoda models were still basically appearance and handling
packages, along with some offered power adders, but they used the basic
Mustang GT engines.  To commemorate another anniversary, Saleen offered
the SA-15.

1999
A new year for the Mustang brought about a new body style, with the
launch of the New Edge Mustang.  The 4.6 and 3.8L engines were still
present, with new power ratings.  There would be Roush Mustangs sold in
1999 and 2000, but no engine alterations, and the same stood for
Shinoda.  Saleen models would remain the same as 1998.  The Cobra
received a reported gain of 15 horsepower, but dyno testing proved that
the 1999 Cobra failed to make the listed 320hp.  The cars were all
recalled, modified, and returned with the proper 320 horsepower.

Mustang GT:
-4.6 liter V8, naturally aspirated, fuel injected, 260 horsepower

Cobra:

2000
After the embarrassing horsepower error of 1999, there was no Cobra
offered for 2000, but there was the third edition of the Cobra R, and
this one proved to be the best yet.  Saleen dropped the S351 in 2000,
making the S281 the only option.  Roush and Shinoda were still offering
modifications to GTs.

Having ironed out the low horsepower numbers of the 99 Cobra, Ford
re-released the Cobra in 2001, and they measured up to expectations
this time.  Saleen saw no change, but Roush finally debuted their new
supercharged 4.6L in the stage 3 and special edition models.

There were no Cobras built for the US in 2002, although there were some
made for export.  Things remained the same for Shinoda, while Roush and
Saleen all added new horsepower numbers.

This year marked the release of a new Cobra, which would earn itself a
nasty reputation and nickname…the Terminator.  Packed with a factory
supercharger, the new Cobra became an instant legend.  Although
overshadowed by the Cobra, the return of the Mach1 offered similar
power to the older Cobras, and more power than the GT.

Very little changed for 2004, with the Mach1, GT, Cobra, as well as the
Roush and Saleen models, all using the same engines, although Roush
offered a special edition for the Mustangs anniversary.

In 2005 Ford released their new body style once again with the S197
body style.  An obvious retro version of the original, the 2005 Mustang
was a tremendous success.  More horsepower was offered across the
boards, both from Ford and from the aftermarket tuners.

2007
While the 2007 Ford Mustang base model, GT, Saleen, and Roush offerings
received little change, a Mustang icon returned. For the first time in
over 35 years, the Shelby name graced the body of a production Ford
Mustang, thanks to the 2007 Ford Mustang Shelby Cobra GT500. Packed
with the supercharged 5.4L engine previously found in the Ford GT
Supercar, the return of the Shelby and GT500 names to the Mustang have
proven to be great ones. Note: Shinoda Boss Mustangs registered with
either Shinoda’s Twin Turbocharger or Supercharger kit.
