In this modern world, we continue to find ways to make our cars more fuel efficient. No corner is left untouched. And with Yokohama Rubber, that’s a literal statement.

At the Tokyo Auto Show, which is still going on through November 8, Yokohama announced a new form of aerodynamics for your tires, and it’s really not as strange as it sounds.

Now, before we go any further, this is not a way for you to gain some downforce for more traction. It’s not quite the opposite either, but the goal of these tires is to reduce your fuel consumption by making the sidewalls more aerodynamically friendly.

This is done by adding small depressions and fins on the sidewall of the tires. By placing the depressions and fins in certain spots and in certain ways, drag is reduced by directing air to escape the wheel well more efficiently, while moving air around the tire on the outside and also reducing lift without adding drag or downforce.

Pretty cool, right?
