Boss 351 for Sale in Australia Proves Mustang Love is Worldwide
Australian-transplant 1971 Boss has the 330 HP R-code Cleveland 351 motor, the most powerful version of that model year.
Even though the Ford Mustang is an iconic part of Americana, it’s beloved the world over. In fact, it’s currently the best-selling sports car in Australia. And Australians don’t just love new Mustangs. Like us, they have a real appreciation for the classics, like this 1971 Boss 351.
Offered for sale by Gosford Cars of New South Wales, Australia, this big-body Mustang represents one of the last hurrahs of the muscle car era before a fuel crisis pulled the rug out from underneath the American car market.
While the downsized Mustang II that followed offered economy and even respectable performance for those early days of emissions controls, most still prefer the ’64 to ’73 models. We assume that Australians are no different.
This bright red and black Boss 351 has a matching interior that’s as eye-catching as the exterior. The R-code 351 cubic inch Cleveland V8 is backed up with a four speed manual transmission and a Ford 9-inch rear axle.
The 1971 R-code 351 Cleveland is the most powerful version of that engine, producing an impressive 330 horsepower. With just over 1,800 produced, it’s a rare bird for sure, and finding one in Australia has to border on the impossible.
That performance and exclusivity comes at a price, though. This Mustang Boss 351 is being offered with an asking price of $105,000 Australian dollars. That comes to $75,000 American dollars.
Given the price of many restored muscle cars, that’s quite a bargain. While the ’64 to ’70 Mustangs have appreciated substantially in value over the years, the ’71-’73 “big body” cars are still a little behind.
Seeing a pristine example in a great color combination really got the wheels turning in our heads, though. Imagine a post-apocalyptic warrior riding across the Australian wasteland in a blood red Mach 1. How cool would that be?
