1967 Mustang

Over the course of seven months, this family has seen 37 states while living out of their 1967 Mustang!

If you’ve ever thought about hitting the road and living the life of a nomad, but thought you’d have to swap your classic Mustang for a motorhome or overlanding van, this is a story for you. Because while it might not be the most practical place for a young family to call home, Drew McCullough, his wife, their toddler and even their dog are making it work. The happy quartet has been on the road for over seven months, and over that time, they’ve seen more of the country than many people have seen in their entire life.

As you might expect, this trip didn’t happen on a whim. After recovering from an unspecified spinal injury, McCullough and his wife took a good hard look how they wanted to live their lives, and decided to scale back everything and head out to see the country. A more traditional vehicle would have been a better fit in many ways, of course, but sometimes, it’s more interesting if you don’t have exactly the right tool for the job. So they acquired a 1967 Mustang and spent three-months turning it into a place they could call home.

Along with the Yakima rack and roof tent, there have been plenty of other mods to the Mustang. Under the hood, there’s a modern fuel-injected 5.0, and power gets sent to the rear wheels through a T5 five-speed manual gearbox. Up front, there are Aldan American coilovers, and out back there’s a beefy five-leaf suspension and adjustable shocks, plus a eight-inch rear end with 3.55 gears. Now generally, I’m not a huge fan of modern wheels on classic cars, but I happen to think the Scott Drake Legendary units look trick as well.

So far, the McCulloughs have seen a whopping 37 states, and since they’re not even close to done, there’s still plenty more adventure to come. To catch up, head to the AdventureStang YouTube channel, and check out all their videos. That said, the motherload of killer photos is — quite predictably — on the Drew and Mix Instagram channel. Be warned: If you’ve on the fence about pulling up stakes and seeing where the wind takes you, approach that page with caution. I like camping about as much as I like clean versions of Wu-Tang singles, and looking at those pics even gave me the itch…
