Will a Hybrid Mustang Be Enough to Take Down the GT?

Ford is expanding its electrified vehicle production, adding more than 700 new jobs at the Flat Rock Assembly Plant plant, where the Mustang is built. Ford is investing more than $700 million in production line updates.

While the move will see at least 13 different electrified Fords introduced over the next five years, the big players will likely be an upcoming plug-in hybrid Transit and an F-150 Hybrid. The part that gets us really excited, however, is the addition of a hybrid-powered Mustang.

The Hybrid Mustang will be produced alongside standard Mustang models. It’s likely to be introduced in late 2019 as a 2020 model.

At least initially the hybridized version will be limited to the North American market. But it will likely be moved to other markets as time goes on.

Ford says the hybrid Mustang “will deliver V8 power and even more low-end torque.” Meaning the engine paired to the hybrid system will likely be the EcoBoost four-cylinder. That sounds promising to us.

While some Ford loyalists will likely decry the increase in technology as a step too far, this seems like the logical progression of the model to us. The Mustang has (for the most part) been Ford’s flagship sporting model and has offered a little bit of something for everyone. If their big push in coming years is electric power, it only makes sense for them to normalize this adjustment by fitting it to one of their icons. With luck, hybridizing the Mustang will continue its legacy for many decades to come, as it transitions to a more future-friendly Ford.
