Ford Mustang SSP: Busting Baddies in Nebraska Since 1993
Most Mustang Special Service Package police cars are retired but the Nebraska State Patrol still has one on active duty.
Over the years, there have been quite a few cool cars used by police. But none, in our humble opinion, can touch the magic of the Fox Body Mustang SSP (Special Service Package), built from 1982-1993. These cars made such an impression on the masses that they’re still in high demand today. But while we thought that all SSPs had long since retired, apparently we were wrong. Because the Nebraska State Patrol still has one of these awesome cars in active service.
We know this because the NSP posted a picture of the car’s latest stop on their Facebook page recently. Granted, they noted that it spends most of its time at parades and shows. But the car is, in fact, still in service, and assisted a Dodge Charger in a recent pursuit. Thankfully, this one didn’t have to perform any sort of P.I.T. maneuver to end the chase.
In reality, this was probably more of a photo op, but it’s a darn good one. And it brings back fond memories for those of us who grew up coveting the Mustang SSP. After all, this was a car specifically built for high speed pursuits, fitted with things that the buying public couldn’t get. Things like beefier cooling systems and suspension.
Obviously, the SSP’s 225 hp and 140-160 mph top speed aren’t going to cut it on today’s highways. But in their day, they were more than capable of chasing down just about anything on the road. And to see one still in service today is just further proof that the amazing little car left quite the impact on a lot of people. Especially if you saw one in your rear-view mirror back in the day.
