How to Replace Rear Disc Brakes on a 2007 Ford Mustang

By -

If you’re interested in purchasing a 2007 Ford Mustang, or if you own one of these vehicles, it’s important that you check on the brakes regularly in order to provide them with the maintenance that they need. Mustangs have disc brakes that must be replaced periodically. Follow these instructions to inspect your brakes and determine if they’re in need of replacement, and then to replace them if they are.

Step 1 — Check Fluid Level

One of the best gauges for the brake system is the brake fluid level. When the level is low enough, the check brake light will come on in your car.

Step 2 — Jack Up the Rear of the Car

Use a jack to prop up the rear of the car if the fluid level indicates that you should examine your brakes or if the brakes have been giving you any problems. Mount the car up on a set of stands that are sturdy and trustworthy while you work.

Step 3 — Remove the Tires and Check Brake Pad Thickness

In order to determine whether your brake pads are in need of new replacement parts, you’ll need to first remove the tires. Unplug the bolts that connect the tires to the wheelwells of the two rear wheels. Carefully lift of the tires and remove them. You’ll see the braking caliper and the remainder of the brake pads in the upper corner of the area underneath the tires.

Using a brake pad thickness gauge, available at your local hardware store or auto body repair shop, check the thickness of the brake pads. The Ford minimum requirement for thickness is 3 millimeters; if your brake pads are anywhere under 5 millimeters, it’s a good time to replace the pads.

Step 4 — Remove Caliper if Replacing Rotors

If you’re replacing the rotors on youxr brakes as well, remove the caliper bolts on the outside of the wheelwell. Gently slide the caliper off of the vehicle so that you can access the rotors. Next, use pliers or cutters to cut off the rotor clip that’s exposed. You can then replace the rotor, if desired.

Step 5 — Push the Piston Into the Caliper

You’ll now need to push the brake piston back into the caliper so that you can start setting up your brakes again. Use a rotating tool to screw the piston back into the caliper. Add the new brake pads and line them up with the notch in the caliper. Clean up all of the brake dust and any other dirt or debris that may have entered the system, set the new pads in place and reinstall the caliper, then the wheel and tire.

It’s important to make sure that the sliding pins are working properly and will move freely before you reinstall the caliper.

If you have any other questions about how to replace the rear disc brakes on your 2007 Ford Mustang, ask a professional for advice.
