Throwback Thursday: Looking Back at the 1967 Shelby GT350
In the first year of the Mustang’s facelift, Shelby and Ford engineers made the decision to make the new 1967 GT350 less of a stripped-down racer, as it was in the previous year. Instead, they chose to mix bits of comfort with bits of its race-bred origins. For instance, you got more upscale interior appointments and a roll cage.
The updated ’67 Mustang was longer and heavier and it didn’t see a power jump from its 289 c.i. engine. But, for the first time a big block was offered, which on the Shelby side was seen in the GT500. As in previous years, the 289 in the GT350 did see a power increase over the factory version, from 271-hp in the H.O. K Code engine to 306 hp.
Featured in this excellent Muscle Car of the Week video is a pristine 1967 Shelby GT350. It handsomely wears green paint and cream colored stripes, while sporting the optional 10-spoke aluminum wheels. Its 289 c.i. V-8 is a very healthy sounding ticker that hasn’t any trouble laying down rubber. Overall, this example is one of the prettiest GT350s that I have seen in a while, and I am certain it would still serve its owner well on the streets and racetrack.
