Shelby GT500 Loses Control on Drag Strip, Crashes out

By -

This is one wild GT500 vs Godzilla drag-strip battle.

It seems like the running joke of Mustangs crashing out aren’t going anyway anytime soon. However in this particular incident, it occurred on a closed course. The video above begins with a shot of what seems to be a fairly bone-stock 2013-2014 Shelby GT500 going up against a heavily modified Nissan GT-R. To be honest, the GT-R could very well be totally stock under the hood. Don’t let the wide body kit and massive rear wing fool you. Yes, it’s a GT-R on a drag strip, but the owner probably spends most of his time hard parking at car meets on the weekend.

Back to the vid… the lights turn green and the GT500 hooks up nicely, and gets off to a fantastic start. The GT-R, with it’s AWD system, hooks up to nobody’s surprise, but the Shelby leaps a bit forward right from the get go. What seems like a fairly easy win for the GT500 turns all bad in an instant, though, right after shifting into third.

In shifts from first to second, the Shelby looked to be in total control, with no traction issues at all. Whatever the case, all hell brakes loose after shifting into third. The GT500’s rear end gets very loose, and goes into full tank slapper mode, sending it crashing first into the left wall, and then bouncing back into the other side.

There doesn’t seem to be any explanation as to why the GT500 loses control, but in racing, anything can happen. Judging from its stock-looking exterior, the car still might be on the factory rubber, Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar G: 2 extreme performance summer tires. Not the ideal choice for the drag strip, but people run street tires all the time and don’t end up pinballing against the walls. Whatever the reason is, all we can say is that we’re glad the driver walked away without serious injury.
