Watch This Fox Mustang Run a 3-Second Pass on 275 Radials

Ziff Hudson tosses gauntlet with blistering 3-second small-tire run.

The last year of doorslammer drag racing has raised some eyebrows in the motorsport world. Mind-blowing, record-setting runs seem to have become the norm almost every weekend. Mustang racers will find little surprise that their Pony cars sit at the forefront of the new frontier. In April 2017, Ziff Hudson became the first racer to run a three-second eigth-mile pass on a 275 radial tire. Hudson pulled it off after a near-miss earlier this year, but his 3.99 at 198 miles per hour looks nearly effortless at Radial Fest Spring at Huntsville Dragway.

Why is that a big deal? If you follow doorslammer racing, you already know. However, Hudson is running an absurd time on Mickey Thompson radial tires that are only 275 millimeters wide in the back. For the sake of comparison, a modern Shelby GT350R comes on 305-millimeter rear tires. The quickest radial cars are “only” running a quarter-of-a-second quicker through the eighth-mile on much bigger meats. The insanity comes from how smoothly the run looks.

Success came with a price for Hudson, however. At Orlando Speed World in January, Hudson nearly hit his three-second mark. His best run of 4.01 seconds electrified the crowd, but a later 4.06-second pass torched his engine. He came back with his single-turbo, 527 cubic-inch Big Block Chevy setup cranked to the “You Got This” setting. And Hudson did not disappoint. That single nose-mounted turbo, by the way, could ingest an entire feral cat with ease. The word “massive” fails to capture the size of Ziff’s 118-millimeter Precision snail.

As mentioned, Hudson isn’t the only one setting the doorslammer world on fire with a Mustang. In late 2016, Kevin Fiscus made the first-ever five-second quarter-mile pass in his radial-tire Mustang. If you like big power and drag racing, this is a great time to be a Mustang enthusiast.
