Default Tuner & C.A.R.B. Compliance, Looking for Auto trans shift improvement

I have a 2017 Ecoboost with an automatic trans. I want to throw a tune at it to improve the shifting, however I know the tuners are not C.A.R.B. compliant. Can you just load the stock tune back in when it comes time for the Bi-annual smog check? That is what I did with my 98 GT, the tuner really firmed up and greatly improved the shifting. Any way to improve shifting other than a tuner? Thanks for any advice you may have!

Your handheld tuner always has the stock tune on it. So when you need to you just "return to stock".

As long as the tune isn't customized for any other boltons that would also need to be exchanged (like headers or cams) you should be able to just swap between the OEM stock tune and the aftermarket performance tune.
