Illegal or Legal?

RE: Illegal or Legal?
I think everybody needs to understand that an officer can arrest you for anything he pleases. It will then be left up to a court to decide. That first and foremost.
This is what I found which is like everything else in law....vague as hell.
I didn't look deep enough to find out about headlights, but I am almost 100% positive that both are illegal in Texas. Here is what I found. Check out 2(D).
I hope this helps.
ยง 547.322. TAILLAMPS REQUIRED. (a) Except as provided
by Subsection (b), a motor vehicle, trailer, semitrailer, pole
trailer, or vehicle that is towed at the end of a combination of
vehicles shall be equipped with at least two taillamps.
(b) A passenger car or truck that was manufactured or
assembled before the model year 1960 shall be equipped with at least
one taillamp.
(c) Taillamps shall be mounted on the rear of the vehicle:
(1) at a height from 15 to 72 inches; and
(2) at the same level and spaced as widely apart as
practicable if a vehicle is equipped with more than one lamp.
(d) A taillamp shall emit a red light plainly visible at a
distance of 1,000 feet from the rear of the vehicle.
(e) If vehicles are traveling in combination, only the
taillamps on the rearmost vehicle are required to emit a light for
the distance specified in Subsection (d).
(f) A taillamp or a separate lamp shall be constructed and
mounted to emit a white light that:
(1) illuminates the rear license plate; and
(2) makes the plate clearly legible at a distance of 50
feet from the rear.
(g) A taillamp, including a separate lamp used to illuminate
a rear license plate, must emit a light when a headlamp or auxiliary
driving lamp is lighted.

RE: Illegal or Legal?
It's illegal in VA, too. We're not allowed to put covers on our lights. Headlight splitters, however, are technical legal. I have them.
Go to your state police website and look up the traffic laws.

RE: Illegal or Legal?
Clear corners are perfectly legal as long as you maintain the correct bulb color. Lots of imports come from the factory that way.
Taillight tint is more sticky. You'll probably be fine as long as it isn't excessively dark. I remember hearing somewhere you have to be able to see tail lights from 500ft away in the day time. As long as you can still do that, you probably won't be hassled.

RE: Illegal or Legal?
i agree on california being the biggest ***** state... just got pulled over by a CHP driving past magic mountain and he gave me a ticket for my tinted windows and not having a front plate. saw him coming from a mile away and moved over to the middle lane and slowed down.. as soon as he got next to me he looked over at my car, slowed WAY THE HELL down and waited for me to pass him and got right behind me. first thing he did when he pulled me over was check my car out, both outside and inside before asking for my registration, etc... i knew it wasn't going to go good for me when he looked at my radar detector and made a face. at least he didn't catch me speeding! or give me a ticket for having a cover on my rear plates.

That "D.O.T." that's on the lens means do not modify. If you do, it no longer meets D.O.T. specs and is therefore illegal. That's the way it has been explained to me by more than one law enforcement officer. They said (correctly as I now understand) that it's not even a state or local thing, it's a federal law. That's why covers and such always state something such as "for off-road use only".

RE: Illegal or Legal?
That sounds 100% believable to me navyscott.
The way I figure it is that a law enforcement officer can cite you for whatever he deems necessary. Technically, he doesn't have to know the specifics of what he is citing you for. It will be up to the DA, Grand Jury etc...as to whether they will uphold the charges.
So, to me I don't want to give them any reason to pull me over if I can avoid it. It makes for a much more pleasant drive if I don't have to deal with that situation. If I think that it might be illegal, I say don't mess with it...it's not worth it. Lawyers aren't cheap and you gotta have one if you're going to court. Beautiful industry they have created for themselves. Just my thoughts...no offense to the lawyers out there.
