Shortening Antenna question
I was just wondering some ppl in here said that they shortened their own antenna and I was wondering how the ball on top comes off if it screws of or pulls off because i know you need to put it back on once you shorten your antenna so that you can pick up radio stations again

RE: Shortening Antenna question
You'll need to cut it off then reattach it.
1. Unscrew the antenna from the car.
2. Measure from base to where you want the antenna. Mark this point.
3. Take a open end box wrench or a adjustable wrench slide it over the antenna leaving enough room for you to slide the wrench from base to the tip. Quickly move wrench from base to tip until the ball on the tip of the antenna pops off. Save the ball for later.
4. use dremel and cut the antenna at the 8 inch mark.
5. Use the sanding drum on the dremel to sand down the new tip to fit in the hole on the ball and you can also drill out a little the hole on the ball for a better fit.
6. Once you are happy with the fit of the ball on the tip use super glue(or a metal bonding glue) to attach the ball to the tip of the new shorty antenna. Let dry.
7. Sand lightly the whole antenna, enough to skuff the existing paint.
8. Use a paper towel to remove the dust from sanding.
9. Spray paint the antenna and let dry.
10. Repeat painting till you have a nice surface or until satisfied.
11. Screw your new shorty antenna back on the car.

RE: Shortening Antenna question
Looks sweet.. thanks for the steps prime... And yeah i know i could get one for 20 bucks but it gives yaa bigger sense of satisfaction when you have done something yourself to your car.. and doesnt help saving 20+ dollars for new antenna and shipping

RE: Shortening Antenna question
Don't cut the ball off, just clamp it in a vise, with the ball pretty close to the top of the jaws and use a pair of dikes to gently pry it off. After you cut the mast just taper the top about 1/4" back and drive the ball back on with a small hammer. A little touch up with some satin black and you'll never be able to tell anything was done.

RE: Shortening Antenna question
what i did was take a pair of pliers to hold the antenna (still on the car) and took another pair to twist and pull up on the ball...came right off .. i then painted the ball.. marked and cut my antenna with the cutoff wheel and installed the ball again with super glue...everything was still on the car just layed a towel around the area so no debris could get on and damage the paint..worked like a charm
