I would suggest having it painted on. I did that and it was only $50. As far as removing the fake gas cap, the poster that said to heat it up with a hair dyer and then saw with fishing line, is the best way to do it. Then clean the area really well with rubbing alcohol. This will remove the tape residue without damaging your clear coat. Here is a pic of how a painted blackout pannel looks.
