I'm going to guess that installation is as easy as screwing the old one off, and then screwing the new one on?

Correct me if I'm wrong.
correct, there is a little adapter thingy that comes with the kit.

I just thought the 8" would be too small since the one you are taking off is a whopping 29"

Concerning 8" vs 14", what I did was went outside with a ruler, and put a thin strip of masking tape on the stock antenna at 8", and another one at 14", and another one at like 11" or something else I had been considering. Then I walked around the car, looked at it from far away, parked it on the street at looked at it from the window of my house, from the driver's seat, from the passenger's seat, etc, and I picked the size which I thought looked the best overall.

The appropriate size for an antenna is totally an opinion thing, so that might be something worth trying if you're fussy and want to get the look just right.

I went to the local Napa store and bought a new black antenna for $7.99, then started cutting it down. It is thinner than the stock one so very easy to cut with a hack saw and tried different lengths until I hit on 12" as where I wanted it to be. I painted the cut with some black paint and bought a rubber tip from the local hobby shop (small package of them for $.75) to top it off.

I took the stock one and removed the ball from the top, cut to 14 inches, took a file and rounded of the top where I cut it until it was the same size as the top where I removed the ball. Put the ball back on and tapped it with a hammer to make sure it was a tight fit. Used black paint to cover up the plier marks on the ball and re-installed. Took about 15 min's to do.
