Default Faux gas cap paint tips?

Ok....so I went ahead and painted the trunk emblem, and have a question. How do I get the emblem to look as smooth as it should like it came stock?

I painted it black, and filled the FORD lettering with mineral grey touch up paint. Looks pretty crappy IMO, so I'm probably going to have to redo it. But here are a couple of pics. I'm also going to either have to get a blackout panel, or get the panel painted, because black paint bled through the masking tape, and I tried wet sanding it, and using the touch up paint. So all around the emblem is fugly as all hell!!!!

what kind of paint did you use? did you prep it? i am going to buy the satin trim ring of ebay that covers the chrome then paint the ring black and put it over the chrome part. that way i can always go back to stock

Yeah, I taped off around the emblem and in the middle where the pony is, used newspaper over that, and covered the bumper and front of the trunk lid. Scuffed and cleaned the emblem. I used dupli-color gloss black acrylic lacquer, and dupli-color clear acrylic enamel.
