Default GT 500 tires on 18 X 8.5 Bullitts

Question: I have a chance to get a brand new set of GT 500 takeoffs really cheap and wonder if the 285/40-18 rears (I know the 245 fronts will be no problem) will fit on my stock polished Bullitts or if they are too wide. I have gotten mixed answers. The guys at the dealer say "sure no problem", but the guys at Discount Tire say, "no way, too much width for your wheels and will change the "stress point" on the sidewalls" By the way, if I get the set, the GT 500 wheels will go up for sale immediately.
Thanks in advance for any help,
Mike

A wild guess...
24x17?

OP, I agree with Discount. It's borderline.

I knew that (lol). Sure wish I could put the 285s on the rear, but know you and Discount are probably right.

Discount should know more than I do...
Those tires would fit the rim with no problem but since they would be bulging out, they would get hotter than normal conditions because the load of the car would have a greater squishing effect.

Besides, it would have that bulge look at the rear and not on the front.
So it'd be weird...
