Anyone painted the unfinished parts on a 2010?

I went to a body shop today to get an estimate for painting the unfinished rocker panels and unfinished part of the rear valance on my 2010. The guy told me because the parts were not smooth and ready for paint they would require "a lot of prep" to get them ready for paint. He said it would probably be cheaper to get new parts from ford than to have him try to prep and paint the current parts. Does this sound right? Has anyone had their stock unfinished parts painted? What would I have to do to prep the parts for paint myself?

Thx
Blair

You can prep your self. I would say take the bumper off unless you like working in akward positions.

You have to sand it, spray it with primer/filler to rid of the texture, then sand it to a smooth finish. there's more than that. it reqires washing etc. but that's the basic of what you have to do. he then would have to spray it with base and clear.
Paint can be expensive. For instance, I've been quoted $200 - 300 to paint my mirrors. You get the point. Find someone else to quote you that actually wants to make money and not just get the easy jobs.

Do a search dude. There's another guy here who posted in the 2010 section that he did it to his car. He has a white and silver car and he painted the black parts all silver. In fact he took it to Maco IIRC. He's a Chief in the navy or something. Go look it up.

CarFX had a shop do it to one of their cars they assembled IIRC.

I dont know what the bodyshop is talking about getting new parts from Ford??? IF you do that, you will still have the same textured pieces to prepare.

Exactly. but the bodyshop near me told me the exact same thing. They wanted $700 to do it.

I was going to find out how much the new parts were and maybe drop them off to Pascal and have him do them up correctly.

Yea, that's him. I always want to call him "Master Chief". He should have gone with that handle. It fits better.

BTW you're lucky you're close to Pascal. At least you know a guy that knows these cars. Unlike the rest of us who just have to take a chance on a local body shop.

+1
Yeah, wish I was closer to pascal.. or him closer lol.

Pick your shop very carefully.. you don't want to end up with a super long headache. The bodyshop I'm at can't get the bumper on right and puts the blame on Ford.. oh and they didn't feel the need to finish the edges of the bumper either. They just slapped it on and pushed it out of the garage.

$700 is high for that, unless you really want to get rid of the texture...

Don't the 05/09 share the same rocker moldings than the 2010?
If so, I'd go with a set of new take off and shoot them GB.
No prep involved there.
