yeah I had a chip about the size you described in my front bumper from some stupid construction truck that shot up a rock. I just cleaned the spot and added some touch about paint its been about 2 months and the spot is fine no peeling or cracking. As for carwashes I like to wash my own car if i can but also I have a nice touchless wash by my house been using it alot never left swirls not even on my black bmw and black usually shows swirls badly!

Swirl marks are not inevitable. When you wash your car, DO NOT use hand pressure. Especially on the first pass. I always use two buckets with optimum no rinse and two mitts. The first time over the car, I use absolutely no pressure, even the weight of my hands is sometimes too much. Then after I have the entire car has been gone over once, I rinse the buckets and mitts and then start over again. The second time around, you can use a little pressure since the abrasives should have been washed off in the first washing. I've found that Turtle Wax Ice covers up pretty much all scratches, no matter how deep they are. The only problem is that the wax only lasts like 2 weeks.

One more tip - wash in a back and forth motion, not in a rotational motion. If you wash in the same direction as the lines of the car, your light scratches will be much less noticeable. Swirls are easy to pick up at any angle. Go to the detailing section of this forum or autogeekonline.net for more info on washing correctly.
