Nothing wrong with that picture in general assuming it was done well with an adequate amount of adhesive and the proper type for the material. Sadly, I don't think either is the case.

My Agent 47 mirrors also broke this weekend. I was at the track, adjusting a HeroCam when I bumped the bucket with my elbow. I didn't even bump it really hard, just a swift bump and it snapped right off.

Upon inspection two things were clear.

1. Not much of the adhesive they used was in the joint. You could clearly see they spread a thin bead around the flat horizontal perimeter of the pedestal flange and just pressed it on. There was a significant amount of this area that was virgin, no adhesive had ever contacted it, and ALL of the area in the vertical area (where the cup recedes slightly into the pedestal) was completely untouched.

2. The adhesive didn't seem to have really fused the two pieces together either, it was just "a glue." I've used strong quality plastic adhesives before (Durabond stuff) that really heat up and fuses plastic together. It's like wood glue, you can't break it without cracking the surrounding plastic completely off. This wasn't it.

To be honest, I was pretty disappointed. I think a mirror should be constructed so that it is able to survive more than a sharp rap on the bucket without falling apart. I ended up JB-Welding it back together because that's all I had trackside, but I made sure to put enough in the joint that it spilled slightly out of the joint and I wiped off the excess. It held together fine over the weekend, so we'll see how long it lasts now.

As a precaution, I'm now going to bring the spare mirrors to the track with me. I ended up losing half a day's sessions just because of something stupid like this.

Just letting folks know. I hope the three experiences on this board are the exception to an otherwise solid rule.

Best,
-j
