Default Question about tire size

I have a 2006 Mustang Gt with 18x8.5 rims. The stock tire size is 235/50/18. I am looking to put a wider tire on, it seems 255 is popular, but I am looking to install 275/40/18, I heard these rims can handle the 275's, but I want to check with you guys and ladies because I don't always "the experts"!! I appreciate all opinions....thanks.

I think 8.5 may be too small for 275's. They may "fit" but may bulge and be a bit unsafe as well. On top of that I don't believe you're going to see any improvement in grip and what not even if it did fit, thanks to the rim.

For 8.5 I'd go for the 255's.

The 255s are popular because they fit the 8.5" wheel perfectly. 275s are too wide, you would need at least a 9.5" wheel for them...

275's require a minimum wheel width of 9".

275's on a 8.5" wheel will cause uneven wear and could be safety issue.

Check the tire specs on most any tire distributors website or use one of the tire size calculators on the web. 275's are too big for an 8.5" wwheel width.

Thanks all. I finally did find it on tirerack, the 275 is for 9 and bigger. I like the wider look but want to keep the stock rims. Thanks for the heads up everyone.

ive got 275`s on 9" on my rear. 9" is the min for the 275( would be better on a 10"), and i put 255`s on 8" on my frt, same thing, thats kinda the min for the 255( would look better on the 9"). the 255 is a pretty meaty size, i sometimes wish i would have went 255 on all 4.

I put on 255s. They fit ok but even with this size I lost a little bit of stability compared to the 235s I had before. I can't image how bad it would be with 275s.

I've got 10" on the back with 275s and they sit oh so flush. Perfect fit.

275 is perfect for 9.5's, I run 9.5's with 275's all the way around. 9" is the smallest you want to go for 275's.
