CDC Black Out Panel Bites The Dust

CDC Black Out Panel Bites The Dust
I've had this panel on my decklid for about five years. The 3M tape has basically given way over the years, so I ripped the thing off because it was bound to fall off anyway...better to do it on my own terms vs. at 50mph.

There's some tape residue left on the deck led. Thoughts on the best way to remove it? Goo gone and a hair dryer?
If I decided to put it back on, I assume that tape is available at any auto parts store?
I saved the old GT faux gas cap emblem, so I suppose I can put that back on and get a magentic panel instead. Regardless the tape needs to come off, so paint saving (and time saving) pointers appreciated.

Patience and conservative amounts of goo gone. That's what I've always done. I never had much luck with heat on residue. Now heat can pull tape leaving no residue though.
If you decide against putting it back on I'd gladly take it off your hands I have the cobra faux gas cap now... :/

3M makes an adhesive removal disc....it's a white disc that reminded me of an eraser. Put it in any low rpm drill and gently use it to remove the adhesive. You will only need a very small amount of goo gone or whatever to finish removing some minor residue. I used this when I took off my rear deck lid spoiler and it made it so easy and quick. You can buy more 3M automotive strength tape to use on it and reattach. Should be a painless venture. Good luck.

It sounds like your surface preparation during the panel install wasn't sufficient. Once properly preped and assuming the tape on the panel was 3M (I don't recall seeing any brand name body accessory manufacturer that doesn't use 3M), the part should be rock-solid for the life of the car. It's all in the prep, including ambient/vehicle skin temps and cure time.

70% alcohol or higher? Standard 70% alcohol has too many constituents in it which basically contaminate the surface. 90 some % is better or a good surface prep from most auto parts store is as good or better. Also, skin surface temp should be between 60 and 80 F. with a cure time of about 12-24 hours with the vehicle kept still (NO driving) and no moisture (including morning dew).
