I like them, but maybe some of the younger people aren't familiar with the history of these lights and why they make sense on the S197.

it's not the shape or the look of the lights. its the implementation of it. the plasticky look with the trunk splitting it in the middle is what kills it. if it came stock with those shape taillights, it would look great.

Perhaps you could enlighten me? I honestly had never seen anything like it. I would love to see a past "retro?" example of what these looked like on older models.

They sure did. I own one (1970).
It started with the 64 Tbirds and in fact, the tail light housings used in the 68 Shelby were taken off from that car and were sequential.
Mercury came up with its own sequential tail with the introduction of the Cougar in 1967.
