I like them, but maybe some of the younger people aren't familiar with the history of these lights and why they make sense on the S197.

Probably a pretty good bet Jim. It's also not like these get welded on either. it's all factory stud locations and 3M tape. Easy enough to change if the results don't satisfy.

Will definitely post up when I'm done tinkering.

pretty damn fugly lol
it's not the shape or the look of the lights. its the implementation of it. the plasticky look with the trunk splitting it in the middle is what kills it. if it came stock with those shape taillights, it would look great.

I think the lights would look better by removing the two taillights on the trunk lid. Leave the trunk lid all black, like a decklid or blackout panel.

Perhaps you could enlighten me? I honestly had never seen anything like it. I would love to see a past "retro?" example of what these looked like on older models.

I'm on my phone so difficult to search right now. Google images of early Shelby GT 500 (like 60 and 70's) and you will see those taillights

Didn't Mercury Cougar have tail lights something like that?

They sure did. I own one (1970).
It started with the 64 Tbirds and in fact, the tail light housings used in the 68 Shelby were taken off from that car and were sequential.
Mercury came up with its own sequential tail with the introduction of the Cougar in 1967.
