I ground the crap out of 4th in he first week I had the car on the highway going like 60 cause my hand slipped off the shifter halfway through the motion and I still wasnt used to the shifter as its a LOT different from my old Focus, it doesnt seem like anything was damaged, it still shifts and accellerates just fine, of course now I just make sure it doesnt happen again. From what I read the engine and transmission on the V6 are tough as they come so I think we'll be ok if we make one or two mistakes.

Yeah i grinded my gears a few times too. How would you know if you caused some type of problem? Everything seems to drive fine. IF there was a problem would this be covered under warranty?
Thanks

On a serious note...I'm sure you did not do any damage...if you had chipped a tooth off a gear you would definitely know it. As far as warranty, if the gears show abuse they could possibly not warranty the tranny. Unlikely, but it probably depends on the dealer as has been discussed here many times on other issues.

Except for reverse gear sliding onto 4th gear, all the gears are in constant mesh. When you shift the fork engages the synchro with a blocker ring and allows that gear to transmit power from the input shaft to the output. I've not been inside one of these 3650s, but most synchros are made of bronze-type of metal that is fairly soft. Over time the teeth on them (what you hear as a grind) get kind of sharp and pointy. I just scanned one from a Ford top-loader that was sitting in my desk.
