When I had a mustang hardtop I bought a Thule roof rack and set it up to carry bikes, skis, and windsurfing equipment. It did no damage to the paint, and contrary to the other post I see no shame in setting up your car so that you can take your toys AND your fun car on long trips to do fun things. Kind of silly to limit yourself....

There are roof racks, trunk racks, and even trailer hitch racks that can be quite secure and do no damage to the car.

When you are done toting toys then you take the racks off and drive it "clean" around town.......
