No, 5-20 is the only approved weight.

That is a thicker oil; recommended is 5W20. I understand these new engines have tighter tolerances and need thinner oil.

Has nothing to do with tolerances. It has to do with MPG. I would not run 10w40 that is for sure. You would be ok with a 5w30 but nothing more than that and stick with Synthetic.

IT has everthing to do with tolerances, stick with 5-20 only nothing else. I believe th engineers who designed the engine and require 5-20 know what they are doing. They tighten the tolerances which required thinner oil thus a small gain in gas mileage.

No it doesn't Ford made this switch about 6 years ago on all there vehicles to meet CAFE standards and new MPG requirement. They even back dated some of the older vehicles. I am pretty sure they went back to the 97 model years. Running a 5w30 is not going to harm your car in anyway shape or form. And running the 10w40 is not going to harm your car but it is not needed. It will also decrease your fuel mileage. The real key is to use the correct oil filter that has the anti drain back valve in it. Another eason they switched to the thinner oil is to help with cold startups. Ford also went to the synthetic blend to help with this. As long as you run a quality synthetic motor oil be it 5w20 or 5w30 for a little added hot ttemp prtection you will be fine. I personally will not run 5w20 in my car it is simpy to thin. I run Mobil 1 5w30 in all my vehicles and will do so with the Mustang.
And that is all it is about.

yeah i'm still trying to determine if i'm gonna use 5w-20 or 5w-30. The 5w-30 is easier to find by me. From what i remember the mobil 1 supersyn 5w-30 is also on the light weight of the 30 side so how would it not be ok?

I would still stick with 5/20. It's readily available at Walmart.

A little off topic but...

Do the new GTs require synthetic oil? Or am I better off saving my money and putting in the regular blend?
